This week's bicycle tour of Spain, near to Girona, covers the Empordà interior and coast. It begins and ends at the foot of the Gavarres mountains, a very nice area with its rolling relief and its picturesque medieval settlements as Monells, Cruïlles, Madremanya, La Pera, Púbol, Foixà , Corçà and Rupià . The route combines a rocky coastline, a soft countryside and a rural atmosphere. You reach the coast in the lovely village of Calella de Palafrugell, an antique fisherman's village that still conserves its original charm with houses by the beach. This tour is outstanding for the quality, the charm and the high gastronomy of the selected lodgings which are all very charming in their typical stone/tile style decor. A tour with this quality would be much higher price in Tuscany or Provence!

'The trip was great! I lived in France for 5 years and took many great trips around Europe, but this may well have been the most memorable!'
  • Reviewer: B. Van Hook
The trip exceeded my expectations in just about every way. It was awesome and challenging to be alone on a bike in a foreign country. I would recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure who is in good health.

Costa Brava Explorer - This is a WONDERFUL tour.  Bo was amazing and helpful, as were his directions and additional information in the hand-outs of things to see and recommended stops and restaurants.  I will recommend Pure Adventures to my bicyclist friends, and will certainly return to you for our next European bicycle adventure!

Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Girona

Arrival in Girona at the train station or airport and transfer on your own to your deluxe 4 star lodging in the historic old town. You have the rest of the day and night to explore Girona and its fantastic Old City. Dinner on your own - we'll give you several suggestions among the many good options available.

Day 2 | Transfer and bike - 47 km, a lot of unpaved roads that meander the countryside.

After breakfast we will meet you for an orientation at 9:00 am to cover the tour, size bikes, and then take you by van to start your ride. (be ready to roll!) The ride starts in Madramanya and goes to the coast bypassing medieval towns such as Cruilles, Peratallada, Ullastret, and then La Bisbal d'Emporda where you find a number of ceramic artisans. Overnight in Llafranc in very charming seaside hotel with Sea View room (subject to availability). Dinner included. (B,D)

Day 3 | loop ride Palamos and coast- 34 km

Ac nie circular route today through the coast of Calella. Leave towards the south, and round the wooded area of Cap Roig and visit the Castell cove; an Iberian settlement and the Vosca Beach. At Palamos, you will find a fishing port and good food for a nice lunch option! Return to your hotel, dinner on your own. (B)

Day 4 | Llafranc to Torroella de Montgri - 37 km

Route to Torroella along the 'Empordanet' which offers a great variety of landscapes and culture. Visit the magnificent medieval historic monument of Pals and continue on through the Pals rice fields to reach Torroella, 7km from the beach and a nice 4 star deluxe hotel and country setting with swimming pool and gastronomic restaurant. Dinner included. (B,D)

Day 5 | Circular ride - Medieval Village Theme - 50 km

This could be a rest day by the pool, or stroll to the beach. But a nice ride is also available to follow the Daro River back to La Bisbal. There you can do some ceramics shopping and visit the museum. A number of small but very charming medieval villages make up the itinerary. Return back to the same hotel, dinner on your own

Day 6 | ride to Empuries & Escala- 44 km

First starting at the medieval village of Torroella de Montgri you go around the Montgri massif until you arrive at the village of L'Escala. Along the seaside you come to the medieval site of Sant Marti d'Empuries. This important archaeological site is located just next to your hotel tonight, unless this is July/Aug, in which case you return to last nights hotel. Dinner on your own either at the hotel or you can go into town. See notes on the side bar about this LEED certified hotel. There is a restaurant where you can dine on your own overlooking the sea. (not included) (B)

Day 7 | Ride to Madremanya - 46km

A nice ride through the interior coastal regions where it becomes slightly more hilly. Visit the medieval villages of Verges, Foixa, Pubol, La Pera, and tiny Madramanya. Charming hotel with pool and dinner included. This charming little hotel and village is to be savored, but we highly recommend the room upgrade to a junior suite - see tarifs on the side bar. (B,D)
