This short visit offers an authentic experience with the Maasai in traditional Maasailand. Because of the bonds we have established with the Maasai in Longido, you will interact with the people not as voyeurs, but as warmly welcomed friends. As you go, your guide Sambeke invites you into the lives of his people. The encounters are genuine, and so is the experience.

Longido lies approximately one hour north of Arusha in the arid acacia woodland north of Mount Meru. Mount Longido dominates the skyline while Kilimanjaro‘s glaciers shine high above to the east. Your camp is relatively simple but well-equipped to include walk-in dome tents with frame beds, mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows. A toilet and shower tent is provided, as well as a mess tent/shelter with tables and backed chairs for meals. Our bush cook will prepare delicious meals, including picnic lunch boxes for day-hikes. We make a special effort to “leave only footprints” behind. Dead trees provide fuel for campfires.

Itinerary

Day 1 – ARUSHA / CULTURE WALK-LONGIDO:  Drive from Arusha to Longido. Meet with your Maasai guide for a briefing to include an introduction to the Maasai language (Kimaa) and customs. Lunch at campsite. Enjoy an afternoon visit to a Maasai boma (village) with a glimpse into the daily routine of a traditional Maasai village. You’ll be warmly invited as friends of our guide and welcomed into the mud houses with an opportunity to meet with the women who make traditional beaded jewelry. Walk around the village with your guide, who will show you the healing plants that have been used for centuries by the Maasai and a chance to see animals. Return to camp for dinner at Longido Private Campsite. (L, D)

Day 2 – CULTURE WALK-OLPUL:  Today you will have a full day in Longido. Walk from camp to the communal water collection point, a busy conflux of culture and animals. Pass through the village on the walk back to camp. Lunch at camp. Take an afternoon walk on Mount Longido slopes to the waterfalls and the Olpul. The Olpul is a “retreat” where the Morani (young Maasai warriors) go to slaughter cows and gorge themselves with meat. The Morani also make a soup seasoned with local herbs that helps them to digest the large quantity of meat they consume here. Return to camp for dinner and overnight at Longido Private Campsite. (B, L, D)

Day 3 – TREKKING-MOUNT LONGIDO/ARUSHA:   After breakfast, you will drive to Kimokowa and begin today’s mountain trek, (6-8 hours total trek) with your Maasai guide. Enjoy your picnic lunch and the breathtaking views en-route. Then descend (2-3 hours) and return to Arusha in the early evening. Onward airport transfers or hotels are priced separately. (B, L)
