Though not well known to the outside world, the remote western province of Qinghai is a place held sacred by Tibetans. When Buddhism was under threat in China during the 12th century, Qinghai became the hiding place and spiritual home of many of Tibetan Buddhism’s most sacred scripts, teachings and artifacts. Qinghai’s hidden monasteries, centuries-old stupas and colorful murals offer an opportunity to witness Tibetan Buddhism in some of its purest and most original forms.

On our journey into the heart of this sacred province, we visit the birth town of the Dalai Lama and experience monastic life firsthand as we join groups of local monks on their pilgrimage walk. After admiring the artistic treasures found in monasteries and local arts schools, we immerse in Qinghai’s spectacular landscape of peaks and forests through a hike into Nanzhong Valley, the very cradle of the Tibetan Buddhist Renaissance.
