Overview of Mt Aspiring Alpine Skills Course
This is a unique 8 day course/ascent where the emphasis is on personalized, hands on experience: including and ascent of Mnt. Aspiring. We not only
teach you the skills you need but you will have plenty of time to practice on ascents designed to match your ability. The highlight of the course is an
ascent of Mnt. Aspiring where you will climb under the guidance of a qualified guide/instructor. Summiting will depend on your fitness and technical ability. If you have ever wanted to climb a classic New Zealand peak but wondered if you had the "right stuff", here is your chance to achieve your potential.
To give you the maximum private attention, the maximum ratio for this course is 2 clients per guide. This course is run as a private course only, this way you are assured of not having your learning affected by the different ability levels that can occur in larger groups.
If you and a partner are looking for the best possible way to maximize the quality of your learning experience, this is the course for you!

Itinerary
Day 1. We pick you up at your accommodation and take you the road head in the West Matukituki Valley where we meet the helicopter. The awesome flight in takes about 20 minutes and for the first time you get an idea of the scale of the Southern Alps. The landing at Bevan Col is on the edge of the Bonar Glacier, it is important that both you and your guide are completely comfortable with your skills so this is a chance to practice self arrest and using your ice axe, walking and climbing with crampons, roping up and pitching. Your base at Colin Todd Hut offers remarkable views of the route for the next day.
Day 2. Summit Day! It is a long day so we usually start around 4 am to give us time to reach the more technical climbing just as the day breaks. Weaving in and out of crevasses the route slowly emerges out of the darkness as the sun rises. The climbing gets more technical until we gain the summit ridge where the angle backs off. One more steep part gaining the summit ice cap and you are on the summit. Aspiring is a perfect summit with 360 deg. views and a comfortable position to sit and appreciate the special moment. The descent is framed by the Tasman Sea stretching out to the horizon. From Colin Todd Hut 10-13 hrs, 1200m (3,900 ft) ascent.
Day 3. This can be a rest day for those who just want a day to recover or we can visit any number of small but challenging peaks in the area. In case of bad weather this day gives us some contingency for a summit day. Often people are interested in skill improvement and want to learn more about crevasse rescue or ice climbing.
Day 4. There are several options today; we often climb Mnt. French or Mnt. Avalanche and move down to French Ridge Hut. If the weather is poor we can go down via Bevan Col and get to Aspiring Hut or a favourite rock bivi. You can walk out to the road end via Bevan Col in a day but for most people it is too difficult a day and by breaking the walk out into two days we have found in general people have a much more rewarding trip. Again day four can be used to give some more options in case of bad weather.
Day 5. Today we walk down to the Matukituki Valley to the road end. The steep descent through spectacular beech forest takes you down from sub-alpine bush to temperate rain forest. A cold swim in the river is mandatory on a hot day and the track out to the road end is a great wind down to the trip of a life time.
