Days 1-2: USA or Canada/Cairo, Egypt

    Arrive in Cairo, gateway to Egypt’s ancient wonders.

Day 3: Cairo

    Travel to the Giza Plateau, site of the pyramids of Mycerinus, Chefren and the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nearby stands the Great Sphinx, its purpose shrouded in mystery. Unwind this evening during an A&K-hosted welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 4: Cairo/Abu Simbel/Aswan

    Begin the day exploring the temples at Abu Simbel, among the most beautiful in Egypt. Fly to Aswan and board ‘Sun Boat IV,’ your home for the next three nights. From there, discover the granite quarries where the Unfinished Obelisk lies.

Day 5: Aswan/Kom Ombo/Edfu/Esna

    Board a motorized boat to the majestic Temple of Philae on the island of Agilika. Continue to Kom Ombo to visit the symmetrically built temple that honors Sobek (the crocodile god). Some of the mummified crocodile found nearby are on display. Then cruise to Edfu, where the massive Temple of Horus (the sky god), dating back to 237 BC, still stands.

Day 6: Esna/Luxor

    This morning, explore the magnificent Temple of Karnak with its massive columns and avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, continuing to the Temple of Luxor, which was completed by Ramses II. This afternoon, tour the terraced Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens and the fabled Colossi of Memnon, two enormous, seated statues of Amenhotep III.

Day 7: Luxor/Cairo

    View Egypt’s splendors in the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, housing treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Here, the Mummy Room displays the preserved remains of many New Kingdom pharaohs.

Day 8: Cairo/Nairobi, Kenya

    Visit the Mosque and Madrasa (Koranic school) of Sultan Hassan, followed by a walking tour of Islamic Cairo from Bab el-Fotouh to Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, where you may bargain for crafts and jewelry. Later, board your overnight flight to Nairobi.

    Fly to the semi-desert bush country of the Northern Frontier District for your first game drive in Samburu, where contrasts of sky, bush and sand amaze. Here, enthusiasts are rewarded with over 300 bird species, including the martial eagle and Somali ostrich, and unique northern species, including Grevy’s zebra and gerenuk. You may also choose to visit a Samburu village to experience local culture firsthand.

    A scenic flight brings you to the Masai Mara Game Reserve. After lunch, head out on an afternoon game drive. The Mara is host to a spectacular, oft-changing array of wildlife, as the plains’ game follows ancient migration routes. Lion, giraffe, several gazelle species and zebra are prevalent. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen, and you may even catch sight of the endangered black rhino.
