The Mount Everest National Park has been a popular destination for trekkers and climbers since the very first expeditions to the Nepalese side of Everest in the 1950's. The High Passes of the Khumbu is our newest trek and will provide a high-altitude challenge for the hiker looking to get off the beaten path and away from the crowds. This trek offers unique views of the spectacular mountain scenery in the Everest region. We find ourselves crossing two high passes: the Renjo La (17,521ft/5,340m) and the Cho La (17,777ft/5,420m). We will also have the option of hiking to the top of two viewpoint summits: Gokyo Ri (17,585ft/5,360m) and Kala Patar (18,188ft/5,545m).

At Namche Bazaar, we deviate off the beaten track into the little-traveled Bhote Koshi Valley, over the Renjo La Pass to Gokyo Lakes. From Lobuche we will visit Everest Base Camp before returning to Gorek Shep and hiking to the top of Kala Pattar the following morning. These seldom-trekked detours allow us to make a unique linking from Namche Bazaar to the Gokyo Valley and on to Mount Everest Base Camp. Both high passes and mountain summits offer superb views of the snow-capped giants of the Khumbu, including Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, Cholatse and Makalu. The unrivaled scenery and solitude of these dramatic mountain valleys are well worth the effort of this demanding trek.

"Here's a chance to do both a classic Nepal trek -- the Annapurna Circuit -- and a little-traveled side trip into the Nar Phu region. We began our Annapurna walk in lowland farming country and headed gradually upward, allowing our bodies to acclimate to higher elevations as we enjoyed the scenery and people. We then detoured into a region only recently opened to visitors, and visited villages influenced by the ways of Tibet, whose border was just a few short miles away. Our trek also took us over two mountain passes, in fabled Himalayan high country where wild blue sheep abound. Altogether, it was a wonderful trip, with nourishing food that sustained us on each day's walk, helpful guides and porters, and incredible opportunities for taking photos, visiting Buddhist monasteries, and witnessing the way of life in a remote region that is reachable only by foot or pack train, and where farmers use yaks to plow fields. Truly an adventure to remember!" -Dennis Webb, Colorado (Member of the NarPhu Valleys Trek
