Itinerary

Day 1 Kick off the journey in vibrant Barcelona, Catalonia’s effervescent capital  Head into the mountains toward the limestone massif of Cadí-Moixeró Nature Reserve, then bike past alpine villages, herds of cows and goats, and farmers tending their crops Adults taste cava, Spain’s version of bubbly.

Day 2 Pedal scenic routes in the French Pyrénées foothills, testing your legs on a stretch that's seen action during the world's greatest bike race  Know how to make bread? butter? Kids learn today at a historic farm  Gaze in awe at the enormous panel of mirrors that make up the world's largest solar furnace Grown-ups sample Catalan vintages - both dry whites and robust reds - while youngsters distinguish the flavors of juices during a blind tasting.

Day 3 Get surreal and admire the artistic genius of Salvador Dalí - kids dive in with a scavenger hunt at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres Spin past deep valleys and rugged rock walls in La Garrotxa, a remote volcanic area rarely visited by tourists  Pine, oak and chestnut trees give way to open fields and olive groves en route to the coast  Savor acclaimed Catalan fusion cuisine and fresh seafood.

Day 4 Kids create their own pottery masterpieces in La Bisbal, Catalonia's ceramics capital Ride alongside fields of sunflowers and wheat on your way to the beautiful Baix Empordà, the "region of coves," stopping to explore hamlets with cobbled town squares, Baroque-style churches and ancient fortresses.

Days 5-6 Bike along the bays of the Costa Brava, where the Mediterranean laps against white-sand beaches, and villages cling to forested hills The Gavarres Nature Reserve offers up a pass for adults to climb before some well-deserved beach time  The younger set joins the Backroads Kid Coordinator for a kids-only adventure, hiking on seaside paths once used by smugglers from the Sant Sebastià lighthouse to beautiful Tamariu Beach, where more fun and games await.
