The small town of Danba, Daocheng and Yading National Park offer some of China’s best hiking and photography opportunities. Stopping on our way to visit some of the best preserved Tibetan monasteries outside of Tibet, the trial heads down to Yunnan province and the mountain paradise of Shangri-la.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive
Arrive in Chengdu; have tea or play mahjong at Wangjiang Park for a local experience; watch Sichuan Opera. Overnight in Chengdu.

Day 02: Chengdu – Luding
Drive towards Luding via Ya’an city (360km 6 hours); visit ancient towns along the road. Overnight in Luding.

Day 03: Luding – Danba
Drive to Danba (150km, 6 hours), the kingdom of thousands of ancient blockhouses; visit local family to converse with the family members to gain a more personal and grounded understanding of their daily life; have dinner with the family and stay at their house to overnight. Homestay.

Day 04: Danba
Day hike in Danba Tibetan villages, from Zhonglu Tribe to Suopo Tribe (5-7 hours); transfer to Danba Town. Overnight in Danba.

Day 05: Danba – Xinduqiao
Drive to Xinduqiao, a small town that recognizes at the gateway to Tibet Highway. En route, stop at Jiaju and visit a Tibetan farmer’s house. Tagong grassland, visit the Lhagang Monastery (Tagong Si) of Sayka Sect, which is surrounded by three hills symbolizing three Bodhisattvas. Overnight in Xinduqiao.

Day 06: Xinduqiao – Litang
Morning walk around Xinduqiao, which is recognized as the paradise for photographers. Drive to Litang via Yajiang; visit the Litang Monastery, also named as Changqingchunker Temple, if lucky, the chance to meet with living Buddha. Overnight in Litang.

Day 07: Litang – Yading
Drive to Yading via Daocheng (260km 6.5 hours); visit Bangpu Monastery, a Tibetan monastery built in 1169. Overnight in Yading.

Day 08: Yading Nature Reserve
Visit Yading Nature Reserve; hike around the Mount Chanadorje; visit Tshonggo Temple (nicknamed "Bandit Monastery" by famed Austrian-American explorer Joseph Rock); hike around Milk Lake, Five-Color Lake and Pearl Lake. Overnight in Yading.

Day 09: Yading –Xiangcheng
Drive to Xiangcheng via Daocheng; visit Dagon and Gongpung Monasteries. Overnight in Xiangcheng.

Day 10: Xiangcheng – Shangri-la
Drive scenic route to Shangri-La; evening walk in Shangri-la ancient town. Overnight in Shangri-la.

Day 11: Shangri-la
Hike around Songzanlin Monastery following the local pilgrimage trail; visit Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Monastery outside Tibet; visit Dabao temple and make your own prayer flag; visit a local Tibetan family for some yak butter tea and snacks. Overnight in Shangri-la.

Day 12: Shangri-la – Lijiang
Drive to Lijiang (3 hours); en route, stop at Tiger Leaping Gorge for an easy hike; explore Lijiang ancient town. Overnight in Lijiang.

Day 13: Lijiang
Visit Black Dragon Pool Park and Dongba Cultural Museum. Explore the local market and source material for lunch. We’ll learn to cook the authentic Naxi food at a Naxi family’s courtyard. Overnight in Lijiang.

Day 14: Depart
Transfer to airport for connecting your flights back home. End of Service.
