This tour is really a tour of the Istrian Peninsula - the part that is found in Croatia! The Istrian Peninsula actually crosses the border of Italy and Slovenia and that is why we start this tour with an easy arrival in Venice or Ljublijana in Slovenia. The cycling all takes place in Croatia and is a combination of interior countryside and Adriatic seaside. Istria is one of Croatia's best places; the inland area resembles Tuscany and the coast boasts great medieval towns and very good beaches. It is also a place for olive oil, wine, and truffles, not to mention excellent home made pasta!

The cycling is moderate in difficulty, and just about any ride day can be made longer. Average daily rides are 58km with an average elevation gain of about 390 meters (+1200ft) Weather is a typical Mediterranean climate; warm temperatures througout most of the year with higher temps in peak summer. This part of Croatia is excellent for cycling versus further south where the very steep islands and busy routes are less appealing and it is off the newlyl beaten trail into Croatia. Here you can enjoy the best of Croatia with lots of influence from Italy and Slovenia nearby.

We have taken 2 cycling trips through this company, one to do the TDF climbs in the Alps and one for the TDF climbs in the Pyrenees. Both were great. These are self guided trips with good directions from the operator. Just got back from the Pyrenees. The cycling was challenging but that's why I went. The accomodations in Argeles were great. Centrally located(most of the climbs started within 1 mile from the hotel), beautiful grounds, extremely hospitable owners, very nice room, great meals [...] I can't say enough good things about the hotel(the Miramont), the owners and the organization of the trip as a whole. A cyclist has to be committed and in shape to do this trip.

Itinerary

ljubljana slovenia Option 1: Arrival to Ljubljana. Arrival to the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. The Slovenian capital has become one of the hippest cities in Europe. It is a reminiscent of Prague - without the crowds. It is so small you can explore most of the town´s sights on foot and yet so cosmopolitan you can hear variety of languages walking along lovely Ljubljanica river. Lively with bars, cafes and art galleries the green city of Ljubljana is a great hideout from big and crowded European capitals… Accommodation in Ljubljana - not included in the tour price, but we can reserve for you. The transfer tomorrow morning is included from a hotel we can book for you; ask us for suggestions.

Option 2: Arrival to Venice. Great advantage of Istria is that it is only 3 hs drive away from Venice which for many centuries was a capital of powerful Venetian republic. Also known as City of Canals, City of Masks or Queen of Adriatic, Venice is definitely one of the most beautiful cities built by man and one of Europe´s most romantic sights. Accommodation in Venice -not included in the tour price, but we can reserve for you. The transfer tomorrow morning is included from a hotel we can book for you; ask us for suggestions.

It is known as a city of artists as almost every door leads to art studio or gallery.
Todays final destination is city of Motovun situated on the top of the hill. Each summer Motovun hosts international film festival and attracts artists from all around the world. Damp Motovun forest creates favorable environment where truffles, a mysterious and unique mushroom, completely hidden underground, is found. Why not start a tour with a typical Istrian dinner (on your own - suggestions provided). Accommodation in Motovun. Magnificent panoramic views open from the top over the sea and we might spot several mussel beds on its surface. Day 5 | Rovinj – Bale – Fazana - 52 km, Altitude gain: 190 m

It is hard to leave Rovinj, but we do so only to get a glimpse of Istrian coastal villages. The route meanders through some cute villages on one side and crystal blue sea on the other. Not far from Rovinj we pass by natural reserve of Palud. Mixed salt - fresh water and wetland vegetation provide shelter and a place to rest many of the inhabitants of the swamp. For those who love bird-watching, this is the right destination. The way will lead us through Bale, perfectly preserved medieval village. Just at about the lunch time we walk narrow cobbled stone streets where hospitable locals are growing rosemary and basil on every corner. Bale village is famous for its annual Jazz festival as well as traditional “Olive oil fest” hosting all Istrian producers. We end up our day in a picturesque village of Fazana in a beautiful villa overlooking the Adriatic and the famous islands of national park Brioni, once a residence of Yugoslavian president Marshall Tito. We make a stroll around the old town and continue on to the most beautiful nature park of Istria, the Kamenjak peninsula.
