Based in one of Thailand’s poorest provinces, participants will witness firsthand the importance of local clinics in maintaining the health and wellbeing of rural Thai communities. Normally you will work with a small community hospital, comparable in size to most western clinics. The clinic serves a village community of approximately 7,000 people. Many who use the clinic come from underprivileged backgrounds.
Customers with formal medical experience may have the opportunity to practice non-intrusive care under the supervision of the Thai medical team. Duties are subject to your competency and formal experience.
The program is not an intervention, but builds awareness of the complex healthcare issues of rural Thai communities and encourages you to enjoy village life. This adventure provides a wonderful and culturally immersive experience. We suggest that all customers have an open-mind to the practical and cultural differences you may encounter.
Please be aware that this medical experience is very popular and during peak times you may be divided into groups to visit multiple locations
Day to day activities that you will be involved in will vary, are subject to your experience and current needs of the medical centre and community. Typical Duties may include:
· Participating in the Hypertension Clinic; focusing on blood pressure, weight and BMI and general health checks
· Participating in the Diabetics Clinic; screening patients
· Helping educate the villagers about health challenges and remaining healthy
· Joining home visits
· Assessment of child development in the community
· Participating in the school health check program including educating young students about the importance of basic hygiene
· If you are Medically qualified you MAY be able to assist with the diagnosing of illnesses and treatment, subject to the agreement of the Thai professionals on site and their patients
· If you are a qualified Nurse you MAY be able to assist with occasional dressing of wounds, sutures etc. although this is of course subject to the agreement of the Thai professionals on site and their patients

DAY 1: WELCOME TO THAILAND! - You will be greeted at Suvarnabhumi Airport (also known as Bangkok International Airport) by our friendly team. We will then proceed to check into your accommodation for the weekend - a quaint local guest house on Khao San Road, Bangkok’s famous backpacker hub. You have the rest of the day to relax and explore the bustling streets of Bangkok. If you're stuck for things to do, ask our team for some advice on some must see places.
DAY 2: ORIENTATION AND CITY TOUR - This morning you will formally meet your coordinators and fellow group members who will share this exciting experience with you. At orientation you will learn more about Thailand and the medical programme. Once we have all the formalities out the way, let's explore Bangkok! We will go on a journey through the Old City which is full of an array of colourful temples, ancient architecture and palaces. To end the day we will go on a peaceful river boat ride. Overnight at Khao San Road.
DAY 3: TRANSFER TO SURIN - After breakfast we will make our way to Surin to begin your volunteering! Your group coordinators will organise transport but typically it will be a 7 hour train ride. Thailand’s trains are slow but full of character making the journey an experience in itself—remember to take photos! On occasion your transfer may be via public bus. Either way you’ll have a comfortable seat, air-con and marvelous views. When you arrive in Surin, our local team will take you to your accommodation and help you settle in and prepare for visiting the medical project tomorrow.
DAY 4-7: MEDICAL EXPERIENCE - Enjoy a hearty breakfast in preparation for your big day today! The projects hours are 09:00 to 15:00 and depending on your schedule and activities, times may vary. You will be informed of any changes by your coordinator. You will be collected from the meeting point and taken via truck to the medical program which is roughly 20-30 minutes away. Once you arrive at the project you’ll be introduced to the Thai healthcare professionals and be given a brief tour of the facility. Your first day is normally spent familiarizing yourself with the project surroundings and you'll have the opportunity to observe the Thai medical staff and meet current patients. You will break for lunch around midday. Lunch is not included in the program so you will need to either bring something or we can help you order great takeaway meals in advance or you can eat at one of the many local restaurants. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to discuss with your coordinator any prior medical experience you may have. Your coordinator will then liaise with the Thai medical team so that they can begin to assign you duties or invite you to observe their practice. The project will conclude at 15:00 and you will be transferred back to your accommodation. Each day you’ll be assigned new duties from the Thai medical team through your coordinator or assist/observe them directly.
DAY 8: FAREWELL OR FREE & EASY - Today is free for you to relax and explore Surin if you are staying on to continue your medical experience the following week. If this is your final day at the program, our team will assist you with planning your onward travel. Those continuing the program will enjoy a three day weekend to fully unwind and enjoy their surroundings. Please note: placements longer than 1 week will follow the same format as this itinerary. You will be placed at projects Monday to Thursday and Friday to Sunday are free for exploring.
