Bhutan opened its door to tourism for the first time in 1974 with 287 tourists. Bhutan is a landlocked country with limited natural resources so, tourism was introduced with an aim to generate foreign exchange revenue needed for the over all development of the country. To develop tourism in the country, Bhutan publicized its unique culture and tradition and it’s pristine environment. Tourism today plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of the country.

Tourism is the second largest revenue earner after hydro-electricity in Bhutan. Every citizen of Bhutan whether it’s a small businessman, a civil servant or a farmer in a remote village is effected by tourism. The revenue generated from tourism goes into infra structure development and in social services like schools and hospitals where the services are provided free.

In 1991 Government privatised tourism to encourage increased private sector development in the tourism sector. Today Bhutan has over 50 full time tour operators and several hundred part time small tour operators operating from homes. Tourism sector employs a great chunk of our work force and is continuously employing more and more people year after year.

Tourism growth in Bhutan has been strictly monitored by the Government right from the start. Bhutan Government has adopted the policy of “High value low volume” to counter the negative impact of tourism on the country’s environment and its tradition and culture.

Tourism Council of Bhutan is the tourism regulatory body in Bhutan. All tourism activities in Bhutan from tourist visa, cultural tours, trekking and other adventure sports are monitored by the Tourism Council of Bhutan.

All tourist tariff is fixed by the Tourism Council of Bhutan. The daily tourist tariff of US$250/person per nigh halt has been fixed for the months of March, April, May, September, October and November from 2011 and US$200/person per night halt has been fixed for the months of December, January, February, June, July and August from next year. Single person visiting Bhutan will have to pay US$40/night stay as supplementary charges. This rate is applicable for both cultural tour and trekking irrespective of the kind of accommodation offered. Three star hotels are the minimum standard hotels all tour operators must use for the clients.

There is no restriction on the number of tourists visiting Bhutan. The seasonality and the pronounced tourism infrastructure has limited the number of tourist arrivals in the kingdom. Most towns in eastern Bhutan can’t accommodate more than 150 clients in a day. The situation was even worse few years back with limited number of hotels and most hotels having less than 30 rooms. In the past few years some towns have seen a boom in the hotel industry but that has hardly served the purpose as most satellite towns still face a crunch.

Bhutan’s main tourism attraction is its unique culture and tradition and its printine environment. Bhutan’s springs and falls are dotted with several religious and historical festivals which are a treat to most tourists. Apart from the conventional cultural tour and trekking, tourists can do filming, photography, mountain biking, birding, textile tour and other interest tours in Bhutan. The best time to visit Bhutan is March, April and May in the spring and September, October and November in the fall

We had an awesome experience in Bhutan. Starting with our agent of reservation (Pema) we felt completely informed and prepared  to come to
Bhutan. While in Bhutan our trip was fantastic! (however not very long enough!). We hope to come back. The people of Bhutan are beautiful,
gentle and friendly. We will tell everyone what a great trip we had with "Adventure Bhutan".

Pelden has been a wonderful guide as well as a delightful friend. He is always attententive and flexible to our likes and dislikes. We both like
his guiding skills, energy and companionship immensely. We would recomment him/his service  to anyone.
Wonderful services but we do not wish the rules for meals are more flexible. Give the guests choices to go out to find local food as well as
    eating in hotels.

Very responsive to emails. It would have been helpful to know that we could have paid additional money and upgraded our hotels. The itinerary
you put together was excellent. The festival experience in Jakar was excellent. Our guide arranged a school visit in Thimphu so we could donate
the books we brought for their library. May be Adventure Bhutan Travel could adopt a school so other visitors could donate to the school of
    Bhutan.
