China is both a land of mystery and an archeological and cultural wonder. Volunteering on a service program is a unique and meaningful way to discover this fascinating nation - home to one-fifth of the world's population.

Working in three distinct metropolitan areas, volunteers on Global Volunteers service teams contribute to the educational development of youth, adults, teachers and also help care for at-risk babies in a children's home.

Our hosts in the cities of Xi'an, Kunming, and Haikou City need your help with educational and child care projects that put you directly in touch with average Chinese people in day-to day- situations. What's more, your service program fee supports these on-going work projects, so you know you're making a broad-based contribution.

"I am amazed at how quickly I am a part of it, and it is a part of me, at how fast I belong - my school, my attending teacher, my teammates, my teaching partner, my bright effervescent, eager, bubbly teenage students. Now they are not just statistics in a newspaper, they are faces I know and I think they will remain in my mind and heart forever."

China Work Projects

Global Volunteers' unique philosophy of service ensures your work projects help advance the host community's current development vision and goals. Always serving at the invitation and under the direction of host community partners, each Global Volunteers team member works alongside local people, and personally contributes to needed project financing through their service program fee. Our long-term commitment to work in partnership on sustained community development projects enables you, in just a short time, to serve as a critical link in a chain of lasting community enhancements. Global Volunteers' Chinese project leaders have asked for assistance in three primary areas:

Teaching conversational English to students of all ages
    Teaching English skills to teachers
    Caring for mentally challenged students

Volunteering in ChinaEnglish Teaching: Teach conversational English to students at the elementary, secondary and university levels. Or, help Chinese teachers of English learn the "fine points" of the language. While they are skilled in the rules of grammar and sentence structure, their ability to pronounce English correctly varies. Please note our host in Kunming has set an age limit of 80 for volunteers on this program.

Child Care: Care for children with autism, cerebral palsy, and Downs Syndrome at a privately funded special needs children’s school. You can work as an assistant to the local teachers in the school activities and training, and help the staff learn conversational English. Read onRead on about the La La Shou Education Center.
