Burnt Well Guest Ranch is located in warm, sunny, southeastern New Mexico. Guests have said "This is John Wayne country!" "I can't believe how far you can see sometimes 50-60 miles!!" "I feel like I'm just visiting family, I feel so at home and welcome here!" "I was actually a valid part of the work at hand!" "It is so-o-o peaceful and relaxing here, my hectic life seems a world away!"
We've been asked, "What does a normal day at Burnt Well look like?" We tell them, "The only thing normal at Burnt Well is the setting on the washing machine!" We don't have set schedules. Flexibility is the word here, and YOU are the focus of our attention while you are at Burnt Well? The only exception would be if there are water problems (windmill, pipeline, etc.) or any other urgent ranch business that may come up, since we are a working ranch first, with no staff. We're it unless you're here and then WE'RE (including you) it!
The elevation at Burnt Well is 4200 feet. We are located in the foothills of the Sacramento mountains with some cholla cactus and limestone rock. Burnt Well is located on Chesser Ranch which is 15,000 acres. Chesser Ranch has been a working cattle and sheep ranch since 1950. We have four wells, two of which are pumped by windmills. The wells range from 450 to 750 feet deep. There are about 50 miles of fence and approximately 10 miles of water pipeline.
We use mainly Quarter Horses. Our remuda is not what you would think of as a regular dude string. Our horses are ranch horses that Kim, or local day help, could do a job on as well as put our guests on. We have a wide range of horses to accommodate various riding levels. There is no nose to tail riding at Burnt Well. Our riding is in open pasture unless you opt for a mountain trail ride for your day trip, with a 6 day package.
Our cattle are Angus cross with the bulls being pure Angus with some Brangus Plus bulls. The small sheep herd that we have are Ramboulett cross. We eat and serve our own natural beef and lamb.
We're a simple ranch with simple pleasures such as; good food, good conversation, lots of storytelling and laughter, campfires and a night sky full of stars. You may be able to coax Patricia to pull out her fiddle and play a few old cowboy tunes or some sweet fiddle melodies. She may even be able to lure some musician friends out from town for a music night around that campfire under the canopy of twinkling stars.
Come to Burnt Well, get dirty and have some fun, then kick your boots off and relax a spell!! We'll fill your tummy with good country food, fill your days with fun and adventure, fill the air with lots of conversation & laughter and fill your mind with unforgettable memories!
