Itinerary

Day 1 – KIGALI:  Arrive Kigali where you are met and transferred to Volcanoes National Park, with lunch en-route. The journey begins north through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome Virunga volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. Dinner and overnight Virunga Lodge. (L, D, Dr)

The Virunga Lodge, set on a stunning hillside, has eight bandas with a panoramic view of the Virunga volcanoes and the lakes Ruhondo and Bulera. The terraced gardens on this high ridge are now well established, with a magical sunken paradise garden as their focal point.
Each bandana features rough, beautiful wooden furniture: cozy chairs, tables and two dressers.  A short walk away from the bandas is the main lodge and dining room. Equipped with benches, tables and chairs made from stone and a wood line porch surrounding the lodge, providing a fantastic view of at least four volcanoes rising from the misty Rwandan countryside.  Being eco-friendly, the lodge makes use of solar power, allowing for constant electricity. The Volcanoes’ staff is happy to teach newcomers the traditional African game igisoro, or boao, as it is called in Uganda. All of these things can be done while sitting by the lovely fireplace.

Day 2 – VIRUNGA: Today after an early breakfast go gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. If you are lucky you can get to the gorillas, spend an hour with them, and be back at the base in time for a late lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. Dinner and overnight Volcanoes Virunga Lodge. (B, L, D, Dr)

Day 3 – VIRUNGA:  Today you can either go gorilla tracking again in Parc National des Volcans(Extra charge**), visit the golden monkeys, drive to Gisenyi, visit Ros Carr's orphanage and Lake Kivu, climb the Visoke/Muhavura volcanoes, trek to Diane Fossey's grave, visit the local school and community projects or walk to Lake Bulera. Overnight Volcanoes Virunga Lodge. (B, L, D, Dr)

Day 4 – KIGALI: After breakfast leave for Kigali. Time permitting, go for a tour of the city including a visit to the market, a pottery project, handicraft shops and the genocide memorial. Transfer to airport for your onward flights. (B, L)
