One of the world's most remote island yet one if its most famous, Easter Island (or Rapa Nui) is known around the world for a collection of 25 meter-high stone sculptures, or Moai. Discovered in 1722 on Easter Sunday by Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeveen the Island is located 3600km from the coast of Chile and 4000 km from French Polynesia. It is believed that a society of Polynesian descent settled here in the 4th century and established a unique tradition of monumental sculpture. Between the 10th and 16th centuries, they erected the enormous stone figures, some over 70 tonnes in weight that were shaped from the island's rock, and transported many kilometres to the coast and pulled upright. Easter Island has long been shrouded in mystery, fascinating visitors, historians and archaeologists around the globe as to its mystifying origins..

"Just wanted to thank you. We are back from Costa Rica and had a wonderful trip. Everything worked really well, on time and we had really good time. Also, I wanted to comment on your contacts in Costa Rica- they were very responsive, helped solve problems on the spot and it was very reassuring to have them there."

"For any single traveling woman - no fear! I, a single 61 year old female, traveled through Egypt & Jordan with absolutely no fear or concern for my safety. Not because I am brave but because there was no external cause for fear. The representatives who met me at the airports, the guides (especially Sam), and the drivers were all wonderful and very informative. The tour was first class and I would love to take another with Kinsington Tours and will recommend them to all my friends."

  • Reviewer: Marie, 2009 located in Asia

"We are back and we had a wonderful trip. Everything was perfectly organized, with the right balance between time with a guide and free time. We were very lucky with the weather, no rain at all except for a 20 minutes thunderstorm in Dalat. Halong Bay was very clear all the time although it is supposed to be foggy during the day. The Metropole was perfect, the best breakfasts ever, the boat, Jasmine, wonderful and we were only 14 people instead of 44…,the Palm Garden in Hoi An very nice, the Ana Mandara in Nha Trang, pure Heaven, the Sofitel in Dalat beautiful, almost empty and a very friendly staff."

Day 2 Easter Island

On this full day excursion, visit the ruins of the temple of Akahanga where the hats of the moai are the outstanding feature, they lie where they fell when the platform was destroyed. Continue to the volcano of Rano Raraku, where all the moai on the island were carved out of the rock. Climb to the edge of the crater of the volcano to appreciate the small lake inside and moai scattered about the inner slopes in various stages of construction. Continue to Ahu Tongariki, where many of the huge moai were toppled by a large “seaquake” in 1960. Finally the tour ends at Anakena beach with its two beautiful ahu. Time for a bathe in the sea before returning to Hanga Roa in the afternoon.

Day 3 Easter Island

Ahu Akivi is the archaeological centre of the Roihi sector and was the first site to be properly restored in the 1960’s. It is a ceremonial site which is particularly interesting not only because of its location (in the centre of the island) but also because of the legends which surround the Seven Moai which are situated on the platform or Ahu. The tour also visits Puna Pau, to the east of the town of Hanga Roa which is situated in a small crater of red stone. This is where the “pukao” or hats (topknots) which crowned the moai were made. On the way it is possible to see the path where they were transported, including some examples of the pukao which have fallen by the wayside.

From the town of Hanga Roa journey towards the archaeological zone of Tahai, which was restored in 1967 and 1968 by the American Professor William Mulloy. This ceremonial site is the oldest on the island, and has been dated to the VI century. Continue on to the Sebastian Englert Museum, founded by the priest of the same name. The Museum’s collection included interesting drawings, artefacts and examples of the Rapa Nui culture.

Day 4 Easter Island

Visit Ana Kai Tangata, a cave that has many paints made from mineral pigments found on the island. The painting depicts the Manutara bird. The arrival of this bird in spring would initiate the Tangata Manu competition. Next continue to Ranu Kau that was the second of the three main volcanoes to erupt about 2.5 million years ago. It has a height of 310m and a huge crater of 1.6km in diameter and a fresh water lagoon 11m deep.

Next to the volcano is the ancient ceremonial city of Orongo, where exist the greatest concentration of petroglyphs. There are pictures of the Tangata manu birdman, the creator god Make
