Itinerary
Day 1 Spoleto
Spoleto is an ancient city in Umbria on a foothill of the Apennines. It is 212 km southeast of Florence, and 126 km north of Rome. Dominated by a 14th century castle, and enclosed by medieval walls, the city of Spoleto is a charming town with mazes of twisting streets and cobbled stairways. Start your exploration at the main square and walk up the steep pedestrian boulevard with its shops, artisans and cafes. The ancient Duomo (cathedral) is revered as one of the oldest in Italy, and you can walk across the deep valley on a Roman era acqueduct. Insiders keep this town a secret and you won't find many tourists here - but its superb restaurants and charming locals make it a must-see destination.

Drive from Rome to Spoleto - the drive is approximately 135 km and driving time is approx. 2 hours. The majority of the drive is on highway.

Enjoy time at leisure exploring the charming city of Spoleto. Be sure to check out the Duomo which is located on the Piazza del Duomo, at the bottom of a flight of steps below the castle. The castle, a former prison, is now a museum - if you feel like taking a peek. From the Duomo, make your way to the Piazza del Mercato, site of the Roman forum and nowadays the town's main square. Wander down Via Fontesecca, with it's little shops selling pottery and various other handcrafts. Spoleto is all about the quiet, relaxed pace of life. Take a leaf from the locals and enjoy a coffee on one of the terraces and watch the world go by...

Day 5 Siena
The Tuscan city of Siena is one of the most lovely in Italy. Though abundant with Renaissance palazzi, churches and museums, the city is compact by any standards. The focal point of the town is the Piazza del Campo. Surrounded by elegant public buildings, it's the perfect starting point for seeing the city's myriad attractions. Nearby, the cathedral sits in its own square, the elaborate façade just a teaser for the grandiose interior. When you need a rest from pacing the streets, you'll find plenty of restaurants serving delicious Tuscan fare and numerous pavement cafés where you could spend hours sipping cappuccinos and watching the world go by.
