Kyrgyzstan's horse culture remains vibrant despite the travails of Socialism. We'll ride and camp out for six days in the foothills of the Tien Shan (Celestial Mountains). After the ride we will join local Kyrgyz musicians in the village of Bokombaevo, near the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, for two days of music and horsemanship displays. Expect spectacular mountain scenery, great riding and warm Kyrgyz hospitality.

Itinerary

8/2

Arrive Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan. City tour in afternoon. Guesthouse overnight.

8/3

All day for sightseeing & shopping for shirdaks and felt handicrafts in Bishkek. Visit Osh bazaar. Guesthouse overnight.

8/4

Drive to the small town of Barskoon, home of the Obolbekov family, Boojum friends and hosts for our horse trek. Barskoon sits on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, where there are more horse carts than cars. (We may begin our drive to Barskoon on the afternoon of 8/3, TBD)

8/5

Morning introduction to Kyrgyz horses and wranglers. Begin horse trek. Camp out in tents.

8/6-8/9

Riding in the foothills of the Tien Shan, 'Celestial Mountains'. We will be horseback for 6 days with no daily vehicle support. Midway through the week a vehicle will arrive to re-supply us for the second half of the ride. Camp out in tents.

8/10

Final day of riding. Return to Barskoon. Guesthouse overnight.

8/11

Drive west along Lake Issyk-Kul to Bokombaevo. Meet Akylbek Serkebaev and family, members of the award-winning Kyrgyz band Kut who will be our hosts for the next two days. Overnight in local guesthouses.

8/12-8/13

Music, concerts, horsemanship displays, ranch visits in and around Bokombaevo. Overnight in local guesthouses.

8/14

Return drive to Bishkek. Guesthouse overnight.

8/15

Free day in Bishkek. Guesthouse overnight.

8/16

Transfers to airport, depart for home.
