Apulia is not only the land of sun and sea but it is also the land of "stones".
Our itinerary "Discovering Apulian Stones" invites You to come to Apulia and to go thorough unusual and original routes of its territory: the wide and charming world of the Apulian "Gravine", deep chasms which open in the ground. Our tour begins in the territory "Murgia Alta" where there is one of the biggest karst depression of the region, the so called "Pulo" of Altamura; then, it goes on through the South nearby Gravina di Puglia and, finally, it gets to "Murgia Ionica": here You can admire the massive "stairs" which support like columns the most important Apulian plateau (tableland), a spectacular sight to the eyes of the curious visitors.
Sometimes the way is difficult but it offers interesting naturalistic starting points so that it has become an obligatory stage for all researchers and naturalists who come here to observe the thick Mediterranean vegetation and who try to perceive some rare species of birds which here built their abodes.
These deep splits represent a real geological and naturalistic patrimony but they are also the evidence of the phenomenon of "living in caves" which have taken place in Apulia since Middle Ages when peoples and monks coming from the East took shelter in this land to escape the religious persecutions and the invasions of hostile peoples.
These large underground villages of dwellings, churches and shelters are wonderful examples of the rupestral civilization, an important stage to understand the historical and cultural events Apulia.
