Greece undoubtedly had a deep influence on Apulian populations.
When the Greeks founded Magna Greacia, they were faced with three ethnical Apulian groups: Japigyans, Daunians, and Messapians. The imported greek culture was gradually absorbed and given a personal touch by the early Apulian artists and craftsmen. Apart from the few remains of Hellenic buildings still standing, the most tangible evidence of this early culture is the wide assortment of vases and small, clay statues found in tombs in the many necropolises dotted around the Apulian subsoil. These are in fact so numerous that our region has been described as a huge archeological dig.
Guided visits of our museums are a way of approaching these greek myths and rediscovering how near the mentality of those far - off days is to that of modern times.
