Although he never visited them, Shakespeare had a love affair with the cities of the Veneto. He set Romeo & Juliet in Verona; his great tragedy, Othello, concerned a Venetian general. Not only is the Veneto region steeped in literature-inspiring history, it is also a breadbasket for the country, and naturally its people are lovers of good food and drink (consider the exquisite Valpolicella and Amarone wines, for instance). All the elements of a good trip seem to be present here—excellent riding, warm hospitality, colourful local personalities. Nonetheless we have always felt that the best trips must crescendo, like a stage play, towards a fitting climax. Our final night masquerade ball in a private Venetian palazzo fits the bill splendidly. Shakespeare would’ve been impressed!
