We know that we have a tendency to overuse superlatives to convey how we feel about the areas through which we travel. How, then, can we possibly avoid going off the deep-end as we
attempt to describe the setting for Odyssey 2012: British Columbia In All Its Glory?
From our very first visit to British Columbia, as we were researching and planning the beginnings of our Canadian Rocky Mountain cycling program, we insisted on crossing over the Great Divide into BC and joining the Golden Triangle, including Kootenay and Yoho Parks and the Columbia River Valley, with the traditional Icefields Parkway section east of the Divide in Alberta.
Towering to the west of our ride along the Columbia are the Purcells and Selkirks, no less impressive than the Rockies. In the context of Classic Canada, we embraced those ranges and beyond to the East Kootenays into the heart of the Columbia/Kootenay river system—Columbia, Kootenay, Slocan and Upper Arrow Lakes. With each passing season, we probed westward among the snowclad summits of the Monashees and Cariboos, the Shuswap and the glacially-sculpted lakes of the Okanagan, the amazing Fraser River Canyon, the Coastal Range and Cascades to the beautiful Sunshine Coast north of Vancouver along the pounding surf of the Pacific. Our insatiable curiosity to see what lies over and beyond the next rise in the road provided the substance for a generation of exciting new cycling adventures---Classic Canada, Columbia River, Kootenay Country, and Columbia/Kootenay Classics, and our original version of Sea-to-Sky and Sunshine Coast tours.
We know that we get tiresome as we crow about the content of these programs, but they are without equal. Twenty-two years of activity in British Columbia can color one’s perspectives.
So, here we are, on the brink of our 30th Anniversary Season, an appropriate opportunity to
plan something truly special. Odyssey 2012: British Columbia In All Its Glory articulates and accumulates the substance of our 22-year love affair with this western-most of Canadian provinces, and it will be an extraordinary adventure. In the course of 21 days, we’ll ride 1,280 miles, accumulate over 65,000 feet of elevation, always immersed in some of North America’s most breathtaking, jaw-dropping alpine majesty. Contact us for details, a day-by-day itinerary or whatever, but most of all, join us for what we believe will be a ride for the ages.
