ncredibly amazing group of people from the owners to the guides to folks at the B&B in Turrialba. The food is some of the freshest and healthiest I have ever eaten. When I first sent an inquiry to Costa Rica Rios I was not expecting such a quick response. Jane called me not long after I asked to be contacted. Her relaxed demeanor and friendly conversation were deal makers. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with fantastic people. Jane and Frazier have put together something that will challenge you but not to the point where it is so difficult not everyone can complete it. The guides are very knowledgeable and none lack a sense of humor. Accommodations were beyond my expectations. When it came time to leave I vowed to come back and will be in 2015. It will be like returning home!!! Great people, great food, great adventures, educational moments and great memories. And best of all I made some lifetime friends.

Itinerary

Day 1 ~ Arrival
Arriving in Paradise
Your Costa Rica Rios guide will greet you at the Juan Santamaria International airport in San Jose, Costa
Rica (SJO), upon your arrival. After leaving the airport, we begin the journey to our headquarters in Turrialba, about a two hour drive through orchards, small towns and beautiful coffee fields. Welcome to Your Home Away From Home. Upon arrival in Turrialba you will settle into your home away from home: comfortable accommodations with tropical courtyard, Volcano view balcony and relaxing hammock area. This evening you will enjoy a delicious and authentic Costa Rican meal prepared by our Chef, Flor. This will be a great opportunity to practice your high school Spanish, as you enjoy Tico company with dinner. The remainder of the evening is spent getting to know your guides for the week while playing Bola Negra, the Costa Rican version of pool around our locally handmade table.

Day 2 ~ Pejibaye
Settling In
After a freshly prepared breakfast, your guides help you outfit your reserved boat and canoeing gear, then we head for the first day on the river or practice site. Enjoy the forested sparkling waterways and the warm conditions which make water contact comfortable. This program starts by warming up those muscles needed for “shredding” the rivers. We take a first paddle down the Pejibaye on a section of river within your comfort and skill level.

Day 3 ~ Sarapiqui
Precious Gems
We paddle the “Jewel of Costa Rica”, the Sarapiqui river, with water features that sometimes seem like they
were custom carved for paddlers who want to learn and practice whitewater skills. The Sarapiqui is noticeably different than any of the other rivers we’ve paddled so far, the rapids are drop pool in character and the jungle canopy is much more dense as we are now much closer to the Caribbean. Toucans, sloth’s, pineapple plantations and the jungle canopy make the Sarapiqui one of the most unique and scenic rivers in Costa Rica. Tonight we will lodge in the town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui near the river.

Day 4 ~ Sarapiqui II
A Second Round of Beauty
Now back at the Sarapiqui River; there are 3 distinct sections on this river that we can paddle, generally the
more difficult whitewater is located upstream while the lower sections provide fantastic opportunities to
practice and improve in the warm tropical water and sunshine. Paddlers sometimes have a difficult time with
this section of river because they are so distracted by the beautiful scenery.

Day 5~ Top Pacuare
Remote Jungle Settings
We step up our , we now canoe the Top Pacuare, a rarely paddled class III section of one of the most beautiful rivers in Costa Rica. This is one of our customer’s favorite sections due to the remoteness and scenery.

Day 6~ Lower Pacuare
Beautiful River Experiences
After fresh Costa Rican coffee and delicious breakfast, we travel to Lower Pacuare. This 24 kilometer (17 miles) class III/IV section is your paddling gem today. This is the most popular run on the Pacuare, often said to be one of the top five river sections in the world. We will put-in a bit higher than other groups and enjoy an additional 4 kilometers of whitewater and rapids as we paddle to our riverside Jungle Camp Site. To spend a night along the shores of the Pacuare River is an experience every person should enjoy in their lives. We light the camp with candles and prepare delicious tropical cuisine in our kitchen with all amenities. The camp is complete with flush toilets, showers, raised platform tents with mattresses and fully landscaped grounds. The whitewater on the first day is class II and III, fun waves and rolling rapids are abound.

Day 7 ~ Lower Pacuare (Day 2)
World Class Experience
After a refreshing morning in camp, we complete the remaining Pacuare section where we encounter the
beautiful rain forest draped canyon walls and cascading waterfalls, making the Pacuare so famous. An early
morning take-out allows us time to drive to La Virgin and the area of the Sarapiqui River. - Those of you on
the 8 day canoe trip will return to Turrialba for a final night of rest before being taken to the airport for your
Saturday Departure. People who stay will have a relaxing evening in La Virgin, possibly including a hike to a waterfall.

Day 8 ~ Turrialba Adventure Day
ZipLines and Volcanos
We rest our body’s today in Turrialba. Options for today’s off river activities include Mt Biking, Volcano hiking, Canyoning, or a Guayabo archeological tour.

Day 9 ~ Pejibaye II
Today we’ll head back to the Pejibaye and put-in further upstream than we did before. The jungle canopy overhangs the river and the rapids are exciting but spaced evenly allowing plenty of time to practice river skills and maneuvering. We continue down the Pejibaye until it joins the Reventazon and paddle the remaining class II/III rapids.

Day 10 ~ Toro
Wildlife Views
The Toro is unique to other Costa Rican rivers both for its yellow water color and innumerable cascading tributary waterfalls. Its source is high on Volcan Poas and as it tumbles towards the Caribbean Sea it passes
over iron-rich soils giving it its trademark rust color. The whitewater is excellent in the Toro with rolling class III on the lower sections. Afterwards, we travel to La Fortuna, where we spend a relaxed evening viewing the always active Arenal volcano.

Day 11 ~ San Lorenzo
La Paz
We canoe the pristine water of one of the northern zone rivers. After taking out, we make our way to the area of the airport, where we have our “farewell” dinner.

Day 12 ~ Arenal Adventure Day
Ground Trembling Excitement
Many off-river activity options are available to us today. These include a boat tour of the Cano Negro wildlife refuge, a hike up to the lava fields of Volcan Arenal, visiting the famous Fortuna waterfall or enjoying the
green lush scenery and views of the volcano by horse back.

Day 13 ~ Departure
Saying Goodbye
We enjoy a great breakfast sharing our experiences. We say our goodbyes at the airport and we start making plans for your return to Costa Rica!
