Itinerary
Our days pass, days of primal light, perfect arrangements of color. No
voice can speak of this. We begin them all believing that there is
something to be felt; something to tell us we are heading in the right
direction; something that brings us to that electric tension between
angler and fish. It’s a search for limits, for tolerances, for ways of
dealing with what, in the end, was the sound of your own voice. You
limit yourself to the narrowest focus, force yourself to concentrate to
such an extent that you’re able to learn a great deal about the fish
you’re hunting down. The less there is the more you’re tested to find
those things that do exist. Within and without.
It’s this
tenacity that we try to impart to our clients everyday we set out. Fish
to the fullest extent of our abilities. This past week was once again
filled with repeat guests that were excited for some blistering salmon
antics. Whether they were Kings, Chums, or Sockeyes everyone took
repeated trips to our salmon destinations. We began fishing the Togiak
this past week and she took no time in producing great days for all
those who put a line in the water. Most people hooked into a fish in
the mid-thirty pound range, though it was Marc Messina who landed the
lodge’s largest king of the season, a monster that weighed 41.5 pounds.
There were tales circulating the dinner table of seldom seen fish that
stayed deep and pulled hard that managed to shake free before their
size could be fully measured. However large they were, the ones that
get away make for great stories. The Nushagak continued to provide
steady action as well.
Sockeye Salmon were on everyone’s list
this week and they were there for the catching. Being a high spirited
fish, they kept reels whining under heavy strain and tired anglers with
hard nosed charges. Along with Sockeye in the Agulowak there were some
outstanding opportunities to catch Arctic Grayling and Rainbow Trout on
dry flies. Secret Creek and the Agulukpak also produced some excellent
rainbow and grayling fishing as well. Rich Fildes and guide TJ Zandoli
had an incredible day on the Agulukpak, catching some hefty trout
including one that weighed 5.5 pounds, establishing a new lodge record.
It was a phenomenal week of fishing that only accentuated the perfect
weather we had. Thank you to all of our guests for making it an
enjoyable week. We look forward to fishing with you again soon.
