Stunning stretches of coastline, the Santa Ynez Mountains and the authentic charm of this ocean side Mediterranean-like city will be your setting to capture one of a kind flash portraits of California surfers, kite surfers, bikers, runners, skate boarders and professional adventure models. Aside from the stunning beach locations within walking distance from your hotel, we will also take you off the beaten path in Santa Barbara for unique photo ops. Join PQA for this fun flash clinic where topographical diversity breeds a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities perfect for flash photography.
During this weekend long workshop, Tom Bol, an editorial and commercial pro photographer who specializes in adventure sports, portraits and travel photography, will teach you how to use TTL off camera flash and location lighting to create flash images like the pros!

Itinerary

Friday

  • 7pm, meet at the conference room of the hotel.
  • All evening: Intros, opening presentation, examples of flash photography by Tom Bol.
  • Flash intro, qualities of light (angle of incidence, inverse sq.law, hard vs. soft) Light theories will be covered plus an examination of hard vs. soft
  • Flash functions and accessories, get to know how your flash works.
  • We will work with every student individually to make sure you know the functions on your flash.
  • Live shooting demonstration photographing a model while being tethered to the computer.

Saturday

  • This morning we will have our first photo shoot with models using TTL flash, balanced fill flash and bounce flash.
  • This is a busy 3-4 hour session demonstrating the above (pros and cons and effects). We will also use and demonstrate Off camera flash with single and multiple flash set ups.
  • After lunch we will teach battery powered studio lighting techniques and the use of Ranger and Quadra Packs, soft boxes, reflectors, scrim panels, gels and snoots.
  • In the late afternoon, we will depart again for a twilight/evening Photo Shoot with 3 models (3:30pm-7pm).
  • Students will experiment with soft boxes and gels to create moody portraits.
  • After dinner we will meet in the conference room for a downloading/editing session and reviews of the techniques learned today.

Sunday

  • After breakfast we will depart for another 3-4 hour photo shoot with models.
  • After lunch: downloading/Reviews back in the conference room.
  • Final slide show of students images and a wrap up of the weekend.
  • The Flash Clinic will end at 6 pm.
