Itinerary

Day 1       Arrive Buenos Aires

Upon arrival you will be met by a local representative for transfer to your hotel in the Palermo district, a great base from which to explore the city. Your hotel is a first class small boutique hotel, centrally located.

Day 2       Buenos Aires

Today you have a privately guided tour of Buenos Aires, visiting the historical monuments and getting the lay of the land in this sprawling, fascinating city. Areas visited include Palermo, the Recoleta, the Plaza de Mayo, the Teatro Colon, San Telmo, and La Boca.  You will have the end of the day free to explore on your own and eat out at one of the city’s excellent restaurants.

Day 3       Free Day in Buenos Aires

Today you have a free day in Buenos Aires to explore some more of the city on your own. We can also arrange day excursions to nearby sites, such as the town of Colonia, Uruguay (a well preserved 17th century Portuguese colonial town that is a UNESCO World Heritage site), or up to Tigre and the Delta (there are also biking excursions up to Tigre).  Another option you might consider is an excursion (day or overnight) to one of the "estancias" in the area of San Antonio de Areco, about 1.5 hours from Buenos Aires.  This is an area that has preserved gaucho traditions more than any other in Argentina and the estancias provide a more in depth experience in this area of Argentine culture and history.

Day 4       Tierra del Fuego

In the morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight down to Tierra del Fuego.  Upon arrival to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, you will be transferred to your hotel, a charming small hotel with views out over the Beagle Channel.

Day 5       Tierra del Fuego National Park

Today you have a privately guided visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park. You'll have the chance to hike along the "coastal trail" that follows the shoreline of the Park, with excellent views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and bays.  This day can be as active as you would like; hiking options range from non-strenuous to very strenuous and the guide will be there to make the most of the day according to your interests.

Day 6       Estancia Harberton

Today you have a full day excursion to Estancia Harberton, an historic hacienda located on the southeastern part of Tierra del Fuego. The estancia was founded in 1886 by missionary/pioneer Thomas Bridges, whoses descendants continue to operate the estancia.  From here you'll take a boat trip out to nearby Gable Island where you can do some hiking (as much or little as you wish), with great views of the Beagle Channel, and then continue to Martillo Island, home to a Magellanic penguin colony and a variety of other marine and birdlife (the boat trip only takes place on Mon, Wed and Sat and the penguins are seasonal, from late November through March).

Day 7       Fly to El Calafate / Transfer to El Chalten

In the morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to El Calafate.  After arriving to El Calafate you will be met and transferred north to El Chalten (about 2.5 hrs. drive).  Located on the northern end of Los Glaciares National Park, and home to legendary climbing peaks Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, a visit to this part of Patagonia is a chance to hike and explore in the midst of some of the most extraordinary mountain scenery on earth.

Day 8      Guided Hike in Glaciares National Park

Today you have a guided excursion around the area.  You can select from the strenuous and rewarding hikes to Fitzroy and Cerro Torre or from shorter hikes like the 2.5 hr. trek to Lake Capri.  You will be able to discuss the different options with your guide in the morning.

Day 9       Free Day in El Chalten

Day at leisure.  There are a number of activities in the area, ranging from full day hikes and glacier treks to relaxing around this small mountain town.

Day 10      Transfer to El Calafate

You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to El Calafate with drop off at your estancia.  Bordering Los Glaciares National Park, this estancia offers a view into traditional Patagonian ranch life and access to some beautiful and less visited areas of Argentine Patagonia.

Day 11       Perito Moreno Glacier

In the morning you will be picked up for your excursion to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Rather than just view the glacier from a distance, you’ll have a “mini-trekking” on the glacier itself; crampons will be provided (this is a non technical and non-strenuous walking excursion on the glacier). Afterward you will visit the traditional viewing spots before returning back to your estancia for a traditional Patagonian asado dinner. (More challenging and strenuous hiking options exist on the Perito Moreno Glacier; if interested please let us know.)

Day 12       Free day on the Estancia

Free day at the estancia. This is an outstanding area for hiking and horseback riding, and the staff at the estancia will take you riding or help you find the best trails to hike. This extra day here is a way to get a deeper perspective on this part of Patagonia and see areas few others have explored.  If you are interested in another full day excursion, we can arrange the boat excursion to Estancia Cristina, located right along the massive Upsala Glacier.)

Day 13       Fly to Buenos Aires / Return Home

In the morning you will be picked up from your estancia and transferred to the El Calafate airport for your flight to Buenos Aires.  Upon arrival to Buenos Aires you will be met and transferred from domestic airport to the international airport where you will make your connecting flight home. (B)
