Fujian Province is blessed with pleasant weather, a long coastline and a wild interior countryside. The province’s southern port city, Xiamen, is a repository of coastal China's old European-style architecture, while in the nearby rural areas we find extraordinary earthen villages of the Hakka people who settled in this region almost a thousand years ago.

On this journey through Fujian, we explore the European-style architecture of Xiamen and the nearby picturesque island of Gulangyu, harkening back to the days when this area was one of many foreign concessions. Moving inland, we visit several Hakka villages and immerse ourselves in the lives and traditions of these ancient people as we marvel at the earthen tulou, the massive circular residences built by the Hakka people that housed up to eighty families at once.
