Easter (Paska) is the most
important holy day in
Greece. During Easter week,
known as the Great Week
(Megali Evdomada), you will
find rich pageantry and deep
devotion. There is also
joyous celebrating. The forty
day fasting period (nisteia) is
over and Greeks are ready to
resume eating meat, butter
and milk products.
Each region of Greece has
several special local customs during Easter.
You will get a memorable insight to how the
people of Santorini (known locally as Thira)
spend their Easter at a time when the island
has relatively few foreigners compared to the
summer high season. It will be a very local
and authentic experience.
Apart from the Easter celebrations you will
partake in Santorini’s wine and culinary
culture, get exercise with scenic hikes and
walks, and take a donkey up the steps to the
caldera. The weather in April is warm on a
sunny day and cool in the evening.

Our tour [on the Cyclades islands] was meticulously planned and executed -- the islands, towns where we stayed, cycling routes, sag support, etc. were terrific.  It was logistically very complicated because we always had to be back at a port at the correct time to catch the ferry to the next island, but we never seemed rushed or anything cut short.

Thank you for another wonderful trip [hiking in Crete], I think the very best.  I will miss the whole group, and of course Greece.

What a fabulous trip!  3 of the women I train with are excited about the possibility of travelling to cycle Greece together next year with your company.  I'll let you know as we discuss plans more!  Thank-you once again for a fantastic trip.  Your attention to detail was so appreciated.  You just spoiled everyone.  And I appreciated the opportunity to see a side of Greece most people will never experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Wednesday
Upon arrival, transfer by private vehicle from the airport to
your hotel in Fira, the island’s capital, where your balcony
room overlooks the breathtaking caldera. Shopping or window
shopping in Fira will keep your pleasantly occupied for
the rest of the day.

Day 2: Thursday
Enjoy a traditional Greek cooking class which focuses on
Santorini Easter dishes, wine tasting and a sumptuous lunch.
You can’t spend Easter without decorating Easter eggs, the
symbol of life. Holy Thursday is the customary day to dye
eggs a vivid bright red.

Day 3: Friday
During the day visit Ancient Thira whose ruins sit atop a
peak offering extensive panoramic views. On the evening of
Good Friday, night of the Resurrection, follow a church’s congregation
through town as a man hypnotically pounds a
wooden board symbolizing the nailing of Christ to the cross.

Day 4: Saturday
During the day, take a boat ride into the center of the caldera.
It is probably warm enough to swim and lather yourself in
the hot mud. Attend midnight mass in Pyrgos, Santorini’s
highest town. Join the congregation in lighting candles when
the priest announces the resurrection of Christ (Christos anesti
– Christ has risen). Bring earplugs for the ensuing fireworks!

Day 5: Sunday
Greeks traditionally eat whole spiced lamb roasted
over a charcoal spit on Easter Sunday, and the dyed
Easter eggs --- but first the egg-cracking contest to see
who will have luck for the rest of the year. Breaking
the eggs symbolizes Christ’s breaking from the tomb.
Enjoy a grand afternoon dinner/lunch at a waterside
taverna. Before or after dinner enjoy a 2-3 hour hike
along the island’s ridge to Oia village offers spectacular
caldera views.

Day 6: Monday
Wine is a very unique feature of Santorini. The grapes
are grown on circular wreaths lying on the ground in
ashen earth. You visit a winery in Oia, taking a
tour of the grounds and sampling various local wines
accompanied by local fare, such as Cycladic cheeses
and ham.

Day 7: departure
Private transfer from hotel to Santorini airport for
connecting flight in Athens for home.
