Overview of Volunteer To Keep Children Off The Streets Of Florianopolis By Reading To Them, Playing Games And Through Environmental Projects.
Florianopolis, Brazil is the capital of the state of Santa Catarina.
With almost 400,000 inhabitants, Florianopolis is a beautiful island,
31 miles long and eleven miles wide. It is a modern and cosmopolitan
city that offers calm and remote fisherman villages and populated and
busy neighborhoods. The center of the Island is very busy and where
the larger companies, banks, and malls are located, as well as many
restaurants and night spots. Florianopolis is located in southern
Brazil on the ocean. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge which
allows easy access to the rest of Brazil. There are 42 beaches around
the island, all within a short distance of the downtown center.
Located
in Florianopolis, this project works hard to keep children off of the
streets. For over 50 years it has served the underprivileged children
in the center of this city. Approximately 300 children, ages 8 -12
years old, benefit from this community center. These are children who
have difficulties with their studies and the project helps to keep them
away from the streets. The children are separated by age in the
morning and afternoon. Each group participate in various activities
during the week, including recreation, drawing, painting, writing,
singing, playing games, reading, listening to stories, preparing
theater projects, etc. There is an emphasis on teaching the children
the importance of the environment by teaching techniques for material
recycling, re-use of materials, etc. There is also a daycare at the
center for children up to age 4.
Operated by Geo Visions.
