This program is part of A&K's Family Holidays. During a Family Holiday through Budapest, Vienna and Prague, unearth ghostly legends, explore secret underground tunnels and view glimmering weapons and armor. Test your sculpting skills while making marzipan; compose your own waltz in homage to Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss; and take a horse-drawn carriage ride to a Viennese inn - built in 1447 - to partake in lunch.

Itinerary

Days 1-2: USA or Canada/Budapest, Hungary

    Fly overnight to Budapest, which was once three independent cities located on the banks of the Danube. This is the starting point of your enchanting adventure, which takes you to a trio of cities teeming with old castles, hidden passages and old towns filled with mystery. Following an afternoon at leisure, meet the families sharing your journey during a welcome dinner.

Day 3: Budapest

    This morning enjoy a panoramic tour of the lower town of Pest. Visit the city’s handsome Opera House, see Heroes’ Square one of Budapest’s principal landmarks, St Stephen’s Basilica, and conclude with a visit to the central market hall. After lunch independently visit the huge neo-Gothic Parliament Building (subject to Parliamentary arrangements) before crossing the river and to take a funicular up to the hill of Buda.

Day 4: Budapest/Szentendre/Vienna, Austria

    Explore the artists’ colony of Szentendre and visit the Hungarian Open-Air Museum for a glimpse at 18th- and 19th-century rural life. Later, test your sculpting skills when you make — and taste — marzipan figures. Continue to Vienna.

Day 5: Vienna

    Take a walking tour of Vienna, stopping at the Hofburg Complex — adorned with glittering crown jewels, weapons and suits of armor — as well as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, with its colorful tiled roof. From there, a horse and carriage whisks you to Vienna’s oldest inn — built circa 1447 — for a traditional lunch. Explore the sprawling Schönbrunn Palace, and see the display of miniature carriages (used by the children of the imperial family) at the Carriage Museum.

Day 6: Vienna

    While in the city that was home to Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss, visit the House of Music (Haus der Musik); there, you have the opportunity to conduct a virtual philharmonic orchestra or compose your own waltz. Spend the afternoon at leisure, exploring the exclusive boutiques and intimate coffee houses and savoring the Viennese pastry the city is famed for.

Day 7: Vienna/Prague, Czech Republic

    This morning depart by train to Prague enjoying a packed lunch on board. On arrival in Prague, transfer to your hotel. You may wish to join your tour director this afternoon for an orientation tour before dining at leisure this evening

Day 8: Prague

    This morning enjoy a walking tour of the cobbled lanes and fine period houses of the Old Town, seeing the iconic Charles Bridge and the famous 15th century astronomical clock on the wall of the Old Town Hall. Afterwards visit Wenceslas Square, originally a horse market laid out by Emperor Charles IV in 1348 and named after “Good King” Wenceslas. It was here that the crowds gathered to try and rebuff the Soviet invasion in the “Prague Spring” of 1968, and here that the main celebrations of freedom took place in 1989 at the end of the “Velvet Revolution”. After lunch at leisure, board one of the public riverboats to for a short cruise before crossing over to Mala Strana (Lesser Quarter). Here discover the delightful Vrtba Gardens before meeting Antoin Manta, world renowned artist who specializes in glassworks. Visit his gallery and design your own glass memento to take home with you!

Day 9: Prague

    Continue your exploration of Prague driving up to the Castle hill for a private visit to the library halls of the 12th century Strahov Monastery, containing many priceless Czech manuscripts, including the 10th century Strahov New Testament. Afterwards, in Prague Castle visit the mighty gothic St. Vitus Cathedral – where ‘Good King’ Wenceslas is buried. At the Museum of Miniatures marvel at the imaginative skill of artist Anatoly Konyenko, whose tiny artworks, such as a caravan of camels set in the eye of a needle, need a microscope to be seen. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. This evening enjoy dinner in a restaurant whose fabulous location offers beautiful views of the river and Charles Bridge.

    Transfer to the airport, and board your homebound flight.
