Itinerary

Day 1: USA or Canada/Lima, Peru

Arrive in Lima this evening and transfer to your hotel.
    Miraflores Park Hotel
Day 2: Lima

Explore Peru’s capital, beginning at the Plaza Mayor. Walk past the Cathedral to the Presidential Palace and the Monastery of San Francisco. Spend time wandering the Larco Herrera Museum, one of the city’s best museums for pre- Columbian artifacts. This evening, attend a private welcome dinner at Casa Garcia Alvarado, a stately 1912 mansion still inhabited by Ana Maria Garcia, a descendant of the original owners.
    Miraflores Park Hotel B D
Day 3: Lima/Cusco/Sacred Valley

After breakfast, fly to Cusco — located at over 11,000 feet above sea level — and spend the morning acclimatizing to the altitude. Following lunch, visit the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo, a formidable stone structure of massive terraces that ascend the mountain slopes.
    Hotel Rio Sagrado B L
Day 4: Sacred Valley

Start your exploration of the Sacred Valley of the Incas — the vast valley below Machu Picchu and an area where a traditional lifestyle continues to this day — by visiting the charming town of Chinchero. Delve deeper into local culture when you visit Andean weaver Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez, who leads a women’s weaving collective where you learn firsthand about ancient techniques and about their role in contemporary Andean culture. You also stop at the Kuychi Center, a charity that supports underprivileged children at the Niños del Arco Iris (Children of the Rainbow) Project. Enjoy a barbecue lunch in the gardens and then return to your hotel.

Children of the Rainbow provides meals, medical care and education for deprived children from the surrounding area.
    Hotel Rio Sagrado B L
Day 5: Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu

Journey to Machu Picchu by train, passing through stunning Peruvian countryside along the way. Arrive with plenty of time to begin exploring the breathtaking Incan city. Overlooking the raging Urubamba River and discovered in a hidden tangle of trees atop the mountain, Machu Picchu forever holds the secret of its passing — its Incan inhabitants left no written records of its purpose or its flawless construction. After a tour of the ancient ruins with your guide, there is time to explore on your own. In the evening, sleep in the shadows of the great mountain citadel when you overnight in the only lodge located next to Machu Picchu.
    Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge B L D
Day 6: Machu Picchu/Cusco

Rise with the sun to walk through Machu Picchu in the early morning mist. Join Alfredo Mormontoy Atayupanqui, the former resident archaeologist of the site, for a tour. Alternatively, you may opt for a hike to Inti Punku (Sun Gate), the entry point to the ruins from the Inca Trail, or hike up to Huayna Picchu, the high mountain that is a part of the ruins. Journey back to Cusco aboard the luxurious Hiram Bingham train, enjoying a later departure — meaning more time to explore the famous ruins — and a special gourmet dinner on board.
    Hotel Monasterio B L D
Day 7: Cusco

Discover Cusco on a city tour that includes the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas and the Santo Domingo Temple, a Dominican church built on the foundations of the Koricancha (Place of Gold), the Incas’ principal religious building. Later, explore the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, a testimony to Incan architectural skill. Compiled of massive stones, the walls were cut and placed together with incredible precision and without a single drop of mortar to hold them in place. Continue to Awanakancha, a center where South American camelids are bred. Learn about the renowned fibers created from their coats, as well as the ancient weaving techniques still used today. This evening at your hotel, enjoy cocktails, a farewell dinner and a presentation by a regional expert in ancient Andean music.
    Hotel Monasterio B D
Day 8: Cusco/Lima

Return to Lima, for an evening at leisure.
    Miraflores Park Hotel B
Day 9: Lima/USA or Canada

    Board your homebound flight.
