Starting from McLeodganj (Dharamsala) at about 6000ft in the Kangra valley and passing over the mighty snowbound Dhauladhar, the trail ends at Lamu in the Ravi valley. The trail is the traditional migratory and grazing route of the “Gaddis”, the colourful, semi-nomadic Hindu shepherds who belong to the Kangra and Chamba districts. Each spring, they bring their flocks from the foothills of the Kangra, over the Dhauladhar to the Ravi valley. From there they go higher across the Pir Panjal to the main Himalaya, and on to the rich grazing grounds of the Lingti valley in Spiti.

Itinerary

Day01 : Delhi to McLeodganj (1980m)
Take the overnight train to Pathankot and drive 4hrs to McLeodganj. Hotel

Day02 : In McLeodganj.
Mcleodganj is the seat of the Dalai Lama and is considered as the capital of the Tibetan government in exile. Explore this small township which has a lot to offer.Overnight hotel.

Day03 : Trek McLeodganj to Triund (2850m) 4-5hrs.
The walk up is quite steep and exposed. There are magnificent views down towards the plains. Camp.

Day04 : Triund to Lahesh Cave.(3600m) 5-6hrs.
The trail climbs gently through the oak and conifer forests to reach the campsite at Laka Got where a few Gaddi shepherds and some travelers can usually be seen. We go further up to Lahesh Cave, a huge rock overhang which will be our shelter for the night.

Day05 : Lahesh Cave-Over Indrahar Pass (4350m)-Chatru Parao (3700m). 6-7hrs.
The walk up to the pass is by no means easy, the gradient of the Dhauladhars being quite steep one will have to be on all fours quite a few times. The views from the pass are simply breath taking, the Indian plains stretching to infinity on one side and the high snow caps of the Pir Panjal range on the other side. The descent again is very steep and is very tiring on the knees. Overnight camp.

Day06 : Chatru Parao to Kuarsi village (2700m) 5-6hrs.
The trail goes down moderately then steeply towards a stream for an hour and climbs strenuously for for about 3 hrs to rach a ridge crest. From here on it’s a straight downhill walk to Kuarsi, a typical Gaddi village. Stay in a temple complex.

Day07 : Rest Day at Kuarsi village.

Day08 : Kuarsi to Lamu (1600m) 4-5hrs.
A short descent and an uphill yet again to reach a small pass which offers good views of the Dhauladhars in the south. From here it’s a step descent through the woods and the fields to reach the campsite of Lamu. Overnight camp. Trek ends.

Day09 : Drive Lamu to Dalhousie (2050m) 7-8hrs. Overnight hotel.
Drive along the Ravi river to reach the town of Chamba and then the road climbs up on the Dhauladhar ranges to reach Dalhousie via the pretty Khajjiar lake.

Day10 : Drive Dalhousie to Pathankot Railway Station (3hrs).
Board the overnight train to Delhi.
