Machu Picchu is on so many travelers’ Top 10 lists. After this family tour your kids and teenagers will recommend it to their friends, too. You see, it's not just the wonders of Inca culture. This multi-sport vacation includes some real thrills like whitewater rafting on the Urubamba River and mountain biking in the Inca's Sacred Valley. Our local guides introduce them to llama herders and a Peruvian family who invites them to dinner. Just when it doesn't seem like it could get any better, we ascend to Machu Picchu. This mystery city peeks out of a cloud forest, and we provide personally guided visits to suit every age. (And if you're wondering about the altitude, our highest point is about what you'd experience at a ski resort.)

Itinerary

Our family vacations in Peru meet in Cusco (1 night), where we explore the cobblestone streets before settling into our five-star hotel, a converted 16th century monastery. A country walk takes us right into Inca ruins so solid and safe that it's okay to climb on them. Later, you can relax by the pool or get a spa treatment while the kids visit a world-famous potter. On a nearby ranch, there's a cool chance to wander among long-necked, shaggy-coated llamas and alpacas. Another day, our guides teach us some Quechua words so we can return the greetings we receive when we visit a remote village school. Then we work off some steam on a mountain bike or take a walk before returning to our hotel in the Sacred Valley (3 nights).

As the Vistadome train takes us toward Machu Picchu (2 nights) you'll have the option to de-train early to climb the Inca Trail. With two leisurely days here, you can see the site on your own as well as with our own guide…and take an orchid or birdwatching walk at our luxurious hotel before we return to Cusco.
