The Maze District is the most remote section of Canyonlands National Park. This lost land of canyons and desert is one of the least traveled and most inaccessible areas in the continental United States.

We've planned an unforgettable mountain bike trip into the Maze, taking full advantage of its unique character and outstanding slickrock riding. This bike tour begins with a descent down the historic Flint Trail, and follows the curve of the canyons to the Maze Overlook. One of the trip highlights is a hike through the heart of the Maze. On the sinuous walls of sandstone we'll pass the Harvest Scene, a stirring petroglyph left by the Anasazi. The next three days lead us through the Land of the Standing Rocks and the spectacular Doll's House. Our ride finishes at Lake Powell, where we board a plane for a scenic flight over the Maze District back to Moab.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Flint Trail, Maze Overlook
After meeting at Moab Cyclery, the group will travel to Hans Flat Ranger Station. Following a safety orientation, we will beginning riding our bikes toward The Maze. Midway through the day, a descent takes us down the Flint Trail, a loose, rocky, switchback road that drops us into the National Park and to our camp. The scenery gets more intriguing with each turn of the rough-hewn road. Our campsite is under a star-filled sky at the Maze Overlook.
Total Mileage | 30 miles Camp | Maze Overlook
Terrain | 100% Jeep Road, 100% Van Support

Day 2 | Hike to the Harvest Scene
Our second day is a magical hike through the heart of the Maze. You will do some rock scrambling into the canyon, which is accessible only by foot. While we’re hiking, the support vehicle will take the road around to meet us at the end of the hike. This hike is unsupported, so bring a fanny pack or small backpack to hold your lunch and two water bottles. The Harvest Scene, a stunning 2,000-year-old pictograph panel awaits our arrival. A long scramble up the rocks and along the switchbacks this afternoon brings us to camp at Chimney Rock.
Total Mileage | 10 miles hiking Camp | Chimney Rock
Terrain | Some technical scrambling & sandy washes, No Van Support

Day 3 | The Doll’s House
There is nothing quite like a sunrise at Chimney Rock, and we consider ourselves lucky to be one of the few outfitters able to camp here. A feeling of tranquility and remoteness prevails. You’ll awaken to hot coffee and a delicious breakfast before the day’s activities. After a short morning ride into the Doll’s House, a garden of red rock towers, difficult to access, but well worth the effort, we’ll spend the day exploring the well-preservedAnasazi Indian ruins and granaries found in the area.
Time permitting; we may include a strenuous but spectacular hike down to the Colorado River. After our exploration, we’ll return by bike to our camp at Chimney Rock.
Total Mileage | 10 miles riding, 1-5 miles hiking optional
Camp | Chimney Rock
Terrain | 100% Jeep Road, No Van Support

Day 4 | Chimney Rock to Cowboy Camp
Ride the savannah-like landscape of Waterhole Flat. Later, challenge yourself on the technical slickrock in Teapot Canyon. The road is carved into the solid rock ledges, which wind along canyon walls and erosion-sculpted spires. Camp tonight is just a short hike to an overlook of the mighty Colorado River in Cataract Canyon.

Day 5 | Ride to Hite Marina
Enjoy a day of cycling on the winding road through the carved terrain of the plateau. The riding today is fast and fun, as the miles just seem to roll away as we ride along the Orange Cliffs. The group rides directly to the Hite Airstrip at Lake Powell. A scenic plane flight from Hite to Moab Airport ends the tour. We are the only outfitter in Canyonlands to offer this exciting finale. Return to Moab between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. from the airport. All gear and bicycles left with the support vehicle are transported back to Moab with the guides and will most likely arrive by 8:00 p.m.
