Majestic snow-capped peaks, expansive alpine meadows, tumbling waterfalls and charming Victorian hotels beckon hikers to explore the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado, home of Ryder-Walker Alpine Adventures.

From bubbling hot springs and historic hotels, to the outposts of bank robbers and miners gone “mad,” the San Juan Mountains offer a mother load of scenic hikes and colorful towns. From remote valleys filled with golden aspen leaves, to high alpine passes replete with endless views, we’ll hike beneath the shadows of the resident fourteen thousand foot peaks as we hike our way through the most atmospheric villages of the San Juan range

Our tour begins in the charming mining town of Ouray, home to a variety of world-famous hot spring pools and accentuated by the gorgeous scenery that earned Ouray the title, “The Little Switzerland of America.” We pass through historic Silverton, home of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway, and we continue to Rico, a truly unchanged turn-of-the-century mining town boasting one of the finest gourmet kitchens of the region. Guests soak their toughened bodies in the atmospheric hot springs at Dunton, a remote mining camp turned luxury retreat, before returning to their own hand-hewn log cabins. We finish the tour in cosmopolitan Telluride, with its eclectic galleries, shops and world-class amenities.

Hiking days are challenging but the scenery is breathtaking and, at the end of the day, a hot shower, a delicious meal and the company of other hikers awaits. We also timed the tour to coincide with the peak of the autumn foliage. Photographers from around the world often descend upon the San Juans to capture the spectacular hues that autumn in the mountains provides.

Historians will enjoy myriad examples of nineteenth and twentieth century mining architecture that still characterize the region. Overnight in another remarkable, antique - filled Victorian hotel in downtown Silverton, the terminus of the famed Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Steam Railroad.

one of the most original mining towns in Colorado. Overnight in an historic boarding house turned hotel. Originally constructed as a 40- room boarding house for the miners at the turn of the twentieth century, the hotel and four star restaurant offer a living monument to the mining era that shaped the town.

Day 5 From Rico we follow the Calico Trail to the Dunton Hot Springs Resort, a remote and superbly restored mining camp turned gourmet retreat. Each of Dunton’s guest cabins is an authentic, nineteenth century, hand-hewn log building restored by local and Native American craftsmen who specialize in traditional building techniques.
