Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Nairobi in the evening and overnight at a comfortable guesthouse on the outskirts of the city for the night.
Day 2: After an early breakfast we’ll be transferred to Wilson Airport to board our private charter flight to Borana Ranch which will be our base for the next six nights. On arrival at Borana we’ll be transferred to our lodgings and have time to settle into our rooms and get our bikes together before having lunch. After lunch we’ll have a little more time to tweak our brakes, level our saddles and fill our water bottles before having a short siesta. This will be followed by an afternoon game drive to acquaint ourselves with the terrain and wildlife which call Borana their home, finishing with sundowners atop Pride Rock.
Day 3: This will be our first morning’s hard biking. Taking the escarpment which drops steeply off the eastern rim of the Laikipia plateau we’ll drop approximately 2500 feet in the course of our morning’s ride, mostly along jeep tracks and some single track riding.
We’ll spend the afternoon exploring the valleys and tracks along the escarpment with sundowners atop Samangua – then drop through ‘Rhino Gap’ for a fast ride to the base of the escarpment and a night game drive back to the lodge.
Day 4: After an early breakfast we will be transferred to the Borana airstrip for a Caravan shuttle to Lake Rutundu on Mount Kenya for a cross-country ride down to Lewa. Lunch will be at Kisima where we will have the opportunity to view the flower project before continuing on down to the Lewa Swamp. Cycling through the alpine moorland and Afro-montane cedar forests will be highlights of this day’s cycling. A vehicle will pick us up from Lewa and transfer us back to the lodge.
Day 5: Morning bike ride to a remote waterhole for a bush breakfast then afternoon bike ride to Gaitumo for sundowners atop the hill.
Day 6: Morning bike ride onto Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in search of rhinos with bush breakfast on Lewa. Return to Borana for lunch and an afternoon cycle on the ranch.
Day 7: Full day ride through Mukogodo Forest to Tassia, arriving in time for lunch and a swim. A vehicle will collect us and our bikes from Tassia for the ride home or if Michael Dyer is available then a scenic flight home whilst the vehicle brings the bikes back.
Day 8: Morning to take it easy or do another bike ride then lunch and a late afternoon departure from Borana to Nairobi. Dinner at a restaurant in Nairobi prior to flying home that evening.
