Sail the Beagle Channel in Charles Darwin’s footsteps, wonder at the majesty of nature with its spectacular glaciers, fascinating wildlife and imposing scenery on board a Cruceros Australis ship.

Crown your voyage of discovery by visiting Cape Horn National Park, where you have the opportunity, weather permitting, to set foot on the final land mass before Antarctica.

Both the Mare Australis and Via Australis are comfortable and modern expedition ships which were specially built for navigating these waters at the tip of the Americas. There are daily shore excursions and informative evening lectures as well as fine gastronomy, comfortable cabins and excellent facilities making your expedition cruise a great and pleasurable adventure.

The sailing season is from September to April. Departures from Ushuaia, Argentina, for the 4 day/3 night expedition cruise, are on Wednesdays and Saturdays. From Punta Arenas, Chile, for the 5 day/4 night itinerary, departures are on Saturdays and Tuesdays.

Not only is the cruise a worthy expedition in itself but it is a novel way of traveling from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas and vice versa.


Highlights

Some of the highlights that are visited in both directions are Cape Horn National Park where, weather permitting, one may disembark and Wulaia bay which was one of the places Darwin disembarked at in the Beagle and which was once the largest Yamana aboriginal settlement.

    We had a WONDERFUL time – really incredible.  All the folks we traveled/worked with were great.  We really enjoyed Zacharias  – he was very knowledgeable, and I really tested him on the plants!  The only comment we would probably have was with the excursion to Taquile – I would have much rather spent more time on Amantani.  It was really just a hike of the island and people watching…

    I’m sure I’ll send back more comments as I get caught up back here!  We really had a super time, and really look forward to another trip back to Peru.  Let Tom know we’re thinking Galapagos for next April… J

    The Paine trek was fantastic. After hearing horror stories from other travellers about the gale-force winds & horizontal rain, I couldn't believe my luck when we had 4 days of blue sky and only a little bit of wind on the last day. Perfect.
     
    Our guide, Jay (Chaid is his real name I think, he's from turkey) was brilliant. He couldn't have done more for us, sorting out a few things in the hotel as well as making sure we didn't have to worry about anything other than putting one foot in front of the other. He also made the worlds best sandwiches! I said a big thank you but would be grateful if you could pass this on. So you couldn't have done a better job.

Itinerary

Day 1: Punta Arenas
Check in at Magallanes 990, Punta Arenas, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Cruise ship boarding at 6:00 p.m. The Captain and crew give a welcome cocktail reception on board. Immediately afterwards, the ship departs for “the uttermost part of the earth”. Our excursion will take us through the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel to explore one of the most breathtaking wilderness regions in the world: Southern Patagonia, and Tierra del Fuego.

Day 2 Ainsworth Bay – Tuckers Islets
At dawn, we continue navigating through Almirantazgo Sound, arriving at Ainsworth Bay, inside the Alberto De Agostini National Park. From a distance we may see the Marinelli Glacier which descends from the Darwin Mountain Range, and we will learn how life begins after the retreat of the ice. We will also take a walk to discover a beaver dam in the marvelous subpolar Magellanic forest. On the beach, we will try to see elephant seals, but we cannot guarantee this as the precise location of the colony is unpredictable.
Later, we sail to Tuckers Islets, and after lunch we board the Zodiac boats to view Magellanic Penguins (which only live in the Southern Hemisphere), and Cormorants. In September and April this excursion is replaced by Brookes Bay where we land for a short walk to approach a glacier.

Day 3 Pia Glacier – Glacier Alley
We navigate along the main part of the Beagle Channel to reach Pia Fjord, where we disembark near Pia Glacier. We take a short hike to a look-out point with a spectacular view of the entire glacier tongue, stretching from high in the mountains all the way to the sea. After this unforgettable experience, we continue sailing along the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel through majestic “Glacier Alley”.

Day 4 Cape Horn – Wulaia Bay
We sail through the Beagle and Murray channels to reach Cape Horn National Park, where we will disembark (weather permitting). Cape Horn, is a sheer, 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory, and in the past it was the only entrance to the Pacific Ocean. This place is known as the “End of the Earth”, and it’s the last territory before Antarctica. The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in June 2005.
In the afternoon, we go ashore in historic Wulaia Bay, once the site of one of the region’s largest Yamana aboriginal settlements. Charles Darwin landed here on January 23rd, 1833, during the voyage of the HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for the mesmerizing beauty of its vegetation and geography. We will walk through a Magellanic forest of Lengas, Coihues, Canelos, ferns, and other native vegetation to reach a look-out point.

Day 5 Ushuaia
Arrival at Ushuaia, Argentina’s most important city on Tierra del Fuego, and the southernmost city in the world. We disembark at 8:00 a.m., enabling you to get an early start on visiting the city and national parks, and on continuing your trip through Patagonia.
