Here is your chance to add your name to the short list of adventurers who have  journeyed to the top of the world! The Arctic’s harsh climate defeated many explorers in the past, but you’ll conquer the region’s dense pack ice aboard the Yamal, one of the world’s most powerful icebreakers. You’ll sail north from Murmansk across the Barents sea to reach the Geographic North Pole, then proceed south to the towering volcanic mountains, icebergs, and glaciers of Franz Josef Land. Your voyage will take you through an ever-changing panorama of wind-polished ice up to five meters thick, narrow channels of dark green water, and aquamarine pools scattered across the frozen sea. You will enjoy the immense polar landscapes both from the ship and from an expertly-piloted helicopter, and along the way you can expect to encounter a variety of Arctic wildlife such as polar bears, walruses, and ivory gulls. By the time you complete your trip and return to Murmansk you’ll have unforgettable memories of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

This trip captured our souls and will live with us forever.  Our daughter still talks everyday of the Masaai people in the Sinya camp who carried her during our stay.  Our son bores anyone who comes through our door with our slide show.  We all look at our pictures and pinch ourselves…..were we really there?!  Did we really watch and listen as a mother lion “spoke” to her cubs and they sassed back?  Did we really see giraffes, monkeys, elephants and zebra….all in the same spot?!  Could we really see for hundreds of miles across the savannah?!  Could the sky hold any more stars and has the Milky Way ever been clearer?!  Could the people have been any nicer!?  It is all like a magical dream…

Itinerary

Day 1 - 2      Helsinki, Finland/Murmansk, Russia

Travel over 400 years in one day. Your voyage starts with an overnight stay in the historic city of Helsinki, Finland, which was founded in 1550. The next day you'll take a charter flight from Helsinki to Murmansk, Russia, where you will be transferred to the quayside to board  50 Years of Victory, the world's largest icebreaker.

Meals: Dinner
Day 3      Magnificent Ice Breaker

Sailing north, you'll be able to relax and get to know this legendary icebreaker. It’s as sophisticated as it is powerful: a 75,000 horsepower engine is the very latest in ice breaking technology. What a sight it is! As you cross the Barents Sea, you'll be engaged on board with presentations on everything Arctic from wildlife to history to geology. And of course, you'll have many opportunities to view the native seabirds and whales along the way.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 - 8      Crossing the Great White Expanse

Watching 50 Years Of Victory break through the formidable pack ice is a sight you’ll never forget. Crashing through ice meters thick with a force reminiscent of a 9.0 earthquake, it can reach up to 12 knots in conditions that would defeat most other ships. It’s awe-inspiring. As you travel, take a flight on one of our helicopters for a fascinating aerial view of your progress.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 9      The North Pole

This is it. For the rest of your life, you’ll remember this moment as clearly as you do today. You’ve joined a rare and select group: those that can truly say they’ve stood at the top of the world. Reflect on the many adventurers that came before you, giving their lives for the moment you are now experiencing. You’ll have time for a hike around the expansive ice; you will be able to walk around the world in under a minute!  Enjoy a champagne toast and a BBQ on the ice.   How will you celebrate?

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 10      Just You & the Polar Bears

As 50 Years of Victory takes us back south, stand on the deck and survey the expanse of brilliant blue and white ice that stretches hundreds of kilometers in all directions. Keep an eye out for rare Arctic wildlife, particularly near Franz Josef Land, where polar bear sightings are possible.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 11 - 13      Franz Josef Land

Franz Josef Land is one of the most recently discovered archipelagos in the world. It was only in the late 1800s that this remote and stunning world of jagged mountains and massive icebergs was found, and even today it remains mostly unexplored. There are 191 islands here, creating a naturalist’s paradise. Polar bears, arctic fox, seals, and belugas inhabit the region; walruses and vast colonies of seabirds abound. We’ll attempt to explore this fascinating coast in our zodiacs, and enjoy the spectacular glaciers and volcanic plateaus from our helicopters. But remember, this is a remote region. All landings are subject to the cooperation of the government and the weather.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 14      Barents Sea/Murmansk/Helsinki/Onward

The journey ends, but the stories have just begun. You’ll cross the Barents Sea to Murmansk, where you’ll board your charter flight to Helsinki. At last you can cross the North Pole off your “things to do in my lifetime” list, and you’ll be glad you did. Your memories will last you a lifetime. And your stories will leave your children and grandchildren speechless. Back in Helsinki, you will catch your onward flight home.
