Itinerary
Day 01: Arrive Ulaan Bataar
Day 02: Ulaan Bataar to Unurshireet (160kms ~ paved)
Briefing and early start to ride from Ulaanbaatar through the lovely Tuul River Valley towards Unurshireet. Night stop at a camp on the shores of the Tuul River.
Day 03: Unurshireet to Kharkhorin (250kms ~ 110kms paved, 140kms off-road)
Kharkhorin (also known as Harahorin) was the ancient capital city of Khubilai Khan. Visit the monastery surrounded by 108 stupas.
Day 04: Kharkhorin to Tsenkher (100kms ~ 80kms paved, 20kms off-road)
Ride along the Orkhon Valley towards Tsenkher hot springs. With its green rolling hills, abundant wildlife and nomads settlements along the rivers, it is one of the finest valleys in central Mongolia. Arrive in the evening Tsenkher hot springs in time to enjoy a cold beer and hot outdoor bath!
Day 05: Rest Day ~ Local Rides
Day 06: Tsenkher to Ulzii Soum (100kms ~ off-road)
Early start towards Ulzii Soum. After crossing the Tamir River the route continues north towards the Russian border. Camp in Ulzii Soum.
Day 07: Ulzii Soum to Uraantogoo Mountain (100kms ~ off-road)
Uraantogoo was formed during volcanic eruption. Here the landscape will change from flat steppe into mountainous landscape.
Day 08: Urantogoo to Amarbayasaglan Monastery (170kms ~ 150 paved, 20kms off-road)
Most of this route is hard-top road and will pass through the third largest copper mining city in Mongolia. In the evening will arrive in Amarbaysaglan Monastery, which is located in the foothills of the mountains in the beautiful Iven Gol River Valley. The monastery was built by the Manchuko Emperors in 1726. It was sacked and destroyed in 1937 and re-built in the nineties.
Day 09: Amarbayasaglan to Altanbulak (210kms ~ 130 paved, 90 off-road)
Early start to ride towards Altanbulak on the Mongolia-Russia border. Rest and prepare for tomorrow's border crossing into Russia.
Day 10: Altanbulak to Ulaan Udee (210kms ~ paved)
Another early start for the border crossing into Russia. Clear immigration and customs and meet our Russian counterparts. Lunch in the little village of Khiakhta before hitting the road again for a 210km ride to Ulaan Udee, the capital city of the Republic of Buriatiya.
Day 11: Ulaan Udee to Olkhon Island via Lake Baikal (310kms ~ paved)
Ride along Lake Baikal's eastern shore in the direction of Ust Barguzin, where the bikes are loaded onto a ferry for an overnight sail across Lake Baikal. Sunset and dinner on the boat; arrival in the morning on the island of Olkhon.
Day 12: Rest Day
Day 13: Olkhon to Irkutsk (300kms ~ paved)
Ride the north-western side of the lake, then take ferry across from Olkhon Island to mainland and start our journey on the Northern side of the lake through high mountains and dense Siberian forest on a good paved road to Irkutsk.
Day 14: Irkutsk to Sukhoe. 400kms ~ paved
An early start riding around the lake on a route voted as one of the most scenic roads in Russia. Riding over 400km running parallel to the largest and deepest fresh water lake in the world will leave unforgettable road memories. Arrival in Sukhoe for a dip in the hot water springs.
Day 15: Rest & Recovery Day
Day 16: Sukhoe to Ulaan-Udee (70kms ~ paved)
Arrive back in Ulaan-Udee in time to take in a few cultural sites including seeing a mummified monk. Opportunity for emailing.
Day 17: Ulaan Udee to Darkhan (400kms ~ paved)
Start heading back to Mongolia. After clearing customs there's an overnight stay in Darkhan, Mongolia's second largest city after Ulaanbaatar.
Day 18: Darkhan to Ulaan Bataar (240kms ~ paved)
Early start to get back to UB in time to celebrate and relax before Farewell Party.
Day 19: Tour arrangements end ~ flights Home
