"Hi Eric. We wanted to let you know about our experiences whilecycling from Pittsburgh to D.C. If someone had told us 6 months ago that we would be doing this, we would not have believed it. Although we both are physically active, neither of us had ridden bikes since we were much younger. But, our more experienced biker friend (Jay Rochlin) convinced us to start riding, and even provided one of us with a bike. So, after 3 months of training, we set off to Pittsburgh. This trip turned out to be the best vacation we have ever had. One of the major reasons that it was so great was Aaron. We couldn't have asked for a better guide, chef, driver, supporter. We all rate him "exceeds expectations" in all categories we could possibly consider! Not only was he extremely kind, knowledgeable about a multitude of things including bicycles, food, sights, interesting facts, etc, he was also always available when we needed him, and extended himself beyond expectations. And he always had some different snack or food for lunch every day to surprise us and keep us well-fed and energized. Our trip was so well organized and planned out, and yet we felt comfortable altering the schedule when we wanted or needed. The accommodations were wonderful- staying at a different B&B or Inn every night just added to the experience and every place was unique. We couldn't imagine doing the trip without the organization and support provided by all of you. In addition, the bikes we rented were not only new, but excellent for the terrain. It would have been much harder riding without the shocks! Of course, the other factor of the trip was the incredible scenery along the way. We don't even know how to describe how incredibly beautiful it all was. We especially loved the Great Allegheny Passage. To be able to ride for 300 miles on paths through amazingly beautiful country without cars was unbelievable and we can't imagine that any other place could be any better! We are all very proud of ourselves for completing the ride. We hope that Aaron enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed him. :)

Please pass on our comments to Aaron and everyone else who helped make our trip memorable. We will definitely recommend you to all of our friends. And, hopefully return for a rafting trip next time!

    Thanks to all of you.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cedar Creek To Ohiopyle PA
38 miles of biking, Colonel Crawford’s cabin, Youghiogheny Gorge, Ohiopyle

You will meet your tour mates at our headquarters in Ohiopyle. Load up the bikes and shuttle to our day’s starting point at Cedar Creek Park. You will be pedaling along the Youghiogheny River all day today. The first half of the day you will spend meandering through the small towns that witnessed the coal and coke industry that transformed the industrial age of the world. South of Connellsville, you will pass through the Chestnut Ridge Water Gap, the Youghiogheny Gorge will become much more intimate and you will be surrounded by old growth forest and the protected lands of Ohiopyle State Park.

You will pull into Ohiopyle (where you met us this AM), in time to enjoy sitting by the river, watching folks whitewater rafting or taking a shot at the natural water slides.

Night 1: Lodging at Trillium Lodge
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Garrett to Cumberland Maryland, and a visit to Fallingwater.
36 miles of biking, Fallingwater, Salisbury Viaduct, Big Savage Tunnel, 15 mile downhill

You will be amazed at the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright, before you’re done with your coffee! You will start the day with a quick shuttle over to Fallingwater (3 miles from Trillium Lodge). Then it is time to load up and head to the trail head in Garrett, alongside the Casselman River. Shortly you will be provided with impressive views from atop the 1908’ long Salisbury Viaduct. Over the top of the Eastern continental divide, through the Big Savage Tunnel and to Frostburg you’ll go. This cute mountain town once a bustling industrial community is now the home to a college and a thriving community of outdoor enthusiasts. It is all downhill from here, 15 miles down the face of the Allegheny Front, and through the “narrows’ of Will’s Mountain. You will reach mile 0 of the Great Allegheny Passage, as you’ll come to rest in front of the old Western Maryland Railroad station. This beautiful building is now home to a National Park Service Visitors Center relating the story of “The Great National Project”, the C & O Canal. After spending some time at the visitors center, you will load up for a transport to The Country Inn at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.

Night 2: Lodging at the Inn at Berkeley Spring
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner

Day 3: Williamsport WV to Sharpsburg, MD
30 miles of biking, Cushwa Basin, Aqueducts, Sharpsburg, Antietam

Following a lovely breakfast in our stately surroundings at the Inn, you will load up for a transport to the Cushwa Basin at mile marker 100 of the C & O Canal. The landscape is dramatically different here on the piedmont in the Potomac Valley. The history and the visual story have changed also, the first hint of this is provided by the impressive stonework of the Conococheague Aqueduct. You will cycle past the remains of canal locks, lock houses and other reminders of our nations resolve to expand throughout the 1800’s. Antietam and the town of Sharpsburg will serve as our destination for the day and the conclusion of our time together. There will be plenty of time to explore the battlefield and visit the National Park Service visitors center.

Night 3: You will return to Ohiopyle. Lodging is not included for the termination of the trip
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch.
