Dolpo lies in the north-west region of Nepal (situated behind the Dhaulagiri massif) and is one of the most remote and least explored areas of Nepal. Although the region was opened in 1989 for trekking group the topography, the people in this region have preserved their lifestyle remaining almost untouched by the trappings of modern society; this trek is an opportunity to meet people who follow a lifestyle that goes back centuries. Dolpo was popularized by Eric Valli’s film “Caravan” which was nominated for an Oscar.
The people of Dolpo are of Tibetan origin and maintain their Tibetan culture with monasteries that follow closely the Buddhism of Tibet. The trek is enlivened by the sight of yak caravans that even today travel long distances through difficult terrain to barter goods. The people of Dolpo have a primitive lifestyle with their own dialect and culture. During this wonderful trek you can visit several unique monasteries (gompas), deep blue lake, cascading waterfalls, spectacular mountain views of Dhaulagiri and Kanjirowa Himal. A special permit is required for this trek which can be obtained only from the local trekking operator. The trek takes place through the high rugged mountainous valley which requires some previous trekking experience to enjoy this trek.
From the pass on a clear day you will see the Shey Shikar (6139m), Kenjeralwa and Dhaulagiri I (8169m). At Phoksundo Lake, we see views across the valley to the huge waterfall formed by the Phoksundo Lake Tarakot is an old fortress known by the local people as Dzhong.

  • Reviewer: Wakelin Lee located in Australia
My friend Susie and I (Australians) have been guided on 2 treks with Bijaya Raj Devkota (BJ) of Botanical Treks Excursion in Nepal. The first in March 2002 to the Langtang Region in Eastern Nepal and the second in October 2008 on the Annapurna Circuit in Western Nepal. We had the most wonderful time on both treks and I would recommend BJ as a man who is honest, kind, reliable, generous, very experienced in guiding, with a lovely sense of humour. We certainly hope to go on another trek with him in the future.

  • Reviewer: Kees Schmalz located in Holland
In the last 12 years I made 4 treks with Bijay with my own groups, family and friends from Holland. Every time it was well organised in terms of schedule, locations and especially acclimatization. Nobody get anyway sick. Bijay and his staff are very reliable and always prepared to assist you. The treks we made with Bijay were every time a unforgettable experience.

  • Reviewer: Guisset Jean-Louis located in Narbonne, France
