Mt Elbrus (18,481 ft) is located in the heart of the Caucus Mountains in Russia. It is a spectacular area, and Mt. Elbrus is one of the famous “Seven Summits”.

Our climb begins in the Baksan Valley located at the base of Mt Elbrus. It is a stunning valley that is home to a quaint group of hotels. We will spend two days here hiking and acclimatizing.

From the Baksan Valley we will ascend via ski lift to an elevation of 11,400′. From here it is approximately a two-hour hike to the Priutt Hut at 13,800′. We will take two days at the hut to become better acclimated.

Summit day begins with an early 1:00 AM start, it will take us approximately 10-12 hours to reach the summit and return to the hut. Although the climb is not technical it does require the use of crampons and an ice axe. We will do a review of these skills before the climb at the hut. Snow cats may be used for part of the approach. We may also choose to use one additional camp, depending on conditions.

If you choose not to climb to the summit there are a variety of other outstanding hiking options in the surrounding mountains and valleys.

In addition to being one of the Seven Summits Mt Elbrus is also an outstanding first climb at altitude. It provides a solid base of experience for bigger future climbs such as Denali or Aconcagua! Consider combining an ascent of Elbrus with Kilimanjaro; climb two of the seven summits in one incredible trip!
