Cusco ~

Considered the historical Capitol of Peru, Cusco was named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983. This city was developed under Incan rule in the early 1200s and is now a thriving city. The Spaniards preserved much of the ruins, making them available for travelers to see to this day.
Machu Picchu ~

Known as the lost city of the Incas and is the most well-known symbol of their Empire. This city was built in 1460 AD and was never destroyed by the Spaniards; it is considered a sacred site. Machu Piccu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.
Manu Wildlife Center ~

The Amazon rain forest is the largest tropical forest on Earth, covering nearly 2.7 million square miles. The Peruvian Amazon represents the wildest, most wildlife-packed rain forest in the world. The density and diversity of Amazonian animal and plant species reach global maximum in the extreme western Amazon, precisely the location of the Manu Wilderness. Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Lima
Transfer to hotel and overnight at Hotel Jose Antonio or similar.

Day 2 – Cusco
After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the Lima airport for your morning flight to Cusco. You’ll have the rest of the morning to adjust to Cusco’s altitude. After lunch, you’ll enjoy a guided tour to the nearby Inca ruins including Kenko, the ceremonial bath of Tambomachay and the amazing Sacsayhuaman. You will also take a city tour of Cusco including Koricancha, the Main Plaza and the Cathedral. Overnight at Casa Andina San Blas or similar. (B)

Day 3 – Cusco – Sacred Valley
Today, you’ll have the full day to explore the Sacred Valley with a tour of Willoq and Patachancha weaving villages to learn about the Quechua way of life. You will also visit the community of Patacancha and a local school. Overnight at Hotel Pakaritampu or similar. (B,L)

Day 4 – Sacred Valley
Today, you’ll visit Abra Malaga. At 14,200 feet, Abra Malaga is the low point along a ridge of rugged peaks. Buffering the upper limits of these habitats is the starkly beautiful puna grassland. The bird life here includes many species endemic to a small geographic area in Peru. Overnight at Hotel Pakaritampu or similar. (B,L)

Day 5 – Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu – Cusco
This morning you’ll board the Vistadome train for a full day tour to the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. The complex architecture and spectacular mountain backdrops are sure to leave you breathless. After your guided tour and time for exploration, you’ll board the train for your return to Cusco. Overnight in Cusco at Casa Andina San Blas or similar. (B,L)

Day 6 – Cusco – Boca Manu
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the Cusco airport for a 35-minute flight to Boca Manu. Upon arrival, you’ll take a motorized canoe for the 90 minute journey down the Madre de Dios River to Manu Wildlife Center, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon will be spent exploring some of the 30 miles of clean forest trails that surround the lodge. After dinner you will have a lecture about Manu and then a short night excursion to explore nocturnal life in the rainforest. Overnight at Manu Wildlife Center. (B,L,D)

Days 7-9 – Manu Wildlife Center
Over these three days, you’ll have ample time to explore Amazonian Peru. You can also help scientists collect data for ongoing projects studying resident macaws, giant river otters and tapirs. Overnights at Manu Wildlife Center. (B,L,D)

Day 10 – Manu – Cusco
After an early breakfast, you will board the motor canoe for the return trip to the Manu landing strip, from which you’ll fly to Cusco. Overnight in Cusco at Casa Andina San Blas or similar. (B)

Day 11 – Cusco – Lima
You have the morning to explore Cusco on your own before your return flight back to Lima. (B)
