The last eruption was in 1490. It is one of the most technical mountains to climb in Ecuador, due to its rock and ice peaks. Spaniards named it as Altar, due to its majesty. They also named each one of its peaks: from north to south: El Canónigo, Los Frailes, El Tabernáculo, La Monja Menor, La Monja Mayor, El Obispo y El Acólito.

The Colanes Valley trek is one of the most incredible adventures to enjoy in Ecuador. This valley is located in the Altar Volcano and in the Sangay National Park. The view of the volcano from this valley is one of the most spectacular landscapes, with an incredible beauty of all the park and the Chimborazo... maybe the most beautiful of Ecuador!. Departure from Quito to Riobamba, arrival to an hacienda called Releche, where we will start an unforgettable trekking experience to the highlands of Altar, with mules and people carrying our luggage. Through forests and small waterfalls we will get near the Collanes valley, where we will be able to see the Altar. Next day, through the woods of Polylepis, we will arrive to Yellow Lagoon, that changes color depending on the sun. The lagoon will show us all its natural beauty, with a white blanket in a horseshoe form.

Our experience with Equator Trekking was nothing short of phenomenal. Mateo's knowledge and charisma were the perfect formula for an eye-opening, educational, and most importantly fun trip. It felt like we got to see all different aspects of Ecuador-- from the booming metropolis to beautiful small towns to wilderness. We definitely plan on returning and working with Equatortrekking.com again in the future. Thanks, guys!

The trip organised by equatortrekking.com was professional from start to finish, and lots of fun in-between! Mateo had organised many exciting activities, from horse-riding in the Andes to canyoning in Banos. The instructors he used were first class - very skilled, patient and friendly. Exactly what an action-loving, though not necessarily experienced, traveller would want.
Although we only had five days, Mateo managed to ensure we saw a wide variety of what Ecuador has to offer, including its magnificent volcanoes, lush landscapes, stunning beaches, along with an insider view to the Ecuadorian people - hardworking, but relaxed and warm.
All in all, the trip to Ecuador was one of the best press trips I've experienced and I can't recommend Mateo and his team highly enough.

I had a wonderful time in Ecuador, and would love to come back as soon as I can. I didn't realise how much the country has to offer, but Mateo and his team did an excellent job of showing us the sights and making sure we were well looked after! I highly recommend any adventure holiday trip with them, especially one that takes in the beautiful coast."
