Much like the eastern seaboard of the US or the great cities of Renaissance Tuscany, the area of the Yangtze delta known in Chinese as Jiangnan (South of the Yangtze) rose to prominence as a major cultural and economic center in the middle ages and to this day the various cities of the region continue to retain their importance. Set yourself adrift through this world of waterways, lakes and streams to where wealthy silk and salt merchants rubbed shoulders with some of classical China’s most famous scholars. The centuries of wealth, both commercial and cultural can be seen at every turn, from the world famous gardens of literati escapism in Suzhou, to the lovingly preserved canal-side mansions of Shaoxing and the unique lake-side vistas of Hangzhou. Follow the trip to seek 7 elements representing the south beauty.
