Itinerary
Day 1 | Arrival Day
Arriving in Vienna, you should allow some time to explore this very important historical city. Famous for the arts, and music, as well as its architecture, Vienna is a vibrant, beautiful city with many things to do including seeing the cathedral and the amazingly designed Hundertwasser House. We will do an orientation with you late this afternoon to go over the route ahead to Budapest, the bike set up, and introduction to the GPS and all the equipment. You have a very charming 3 star hotel tonight that is centrally located. You are on your own for dinner tonight, but we will give you some suggestions!
Day 2 | Vienna - Bad Deutsch / Altenburg (55km)
The The first day on the tour takes you along the Danube river valley to the town of Bad Deutsch / Altenburg. The route is almost entirely flat and so even at 55 km this is a relatively easy start. You remain in Lower Austria but approach the Slovak border. Night in charming pension and dinner on your own. (B)
Day 3 | Bad Deutsch / Altenburg - Bratislava - Mosonmagyarovar (60km)
C Today's ride brings you briefly through Slovakia via Bratislava with its historical old town centre. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and though a relatively small city it is rich in history and culture and worth spending a couple hours to visit. Then it's on to Hungary, where the days ride finishes in Mosonmagyarovar. This town is located in the meanders of a small river coming off and following the Danube. Overnight in Mosonmagyarovar, dinner on your own. (B)
Day 4 | Mosonmagyarovar - Gyor (45 km)
You ride between Mosonmagyarovar and Gyor today, which winds its way through farming pastures. The cycling route is broken up by small, farming towns. The destination of today‘s route is the city of Gyor. This town, originally a Hungarian stronghold from A.D.900, has also a superb cathedral from the 12th century. Overnight in Gyor which is situated at the confluence of three rivers: Raba, Rabca and Danube. Dinner on your own. (B)
Day 5 | Gyor - Tata (60 km)
Cycling not far from the Danube's riverflow in this rustic, farming landscape, you will finish in the town of Tata, city of waters, situated on lake Tatal. Overnight in Tata. Dinner on your own - we suggest a nice spot overlooking the lake! Cycling paths around the lake make a nice add on. (B)
Day 6 | Tata - Esztergom (55km)
Today the route goes through forested landscape with an ascent to cover but after that it is a straight run to Esztergom. This town has an immense cathedral, the largest in Hungary, dating from 1822, which incorporates an earlier, renaissance church from the 16th century. Overnight in Esztergom. (B)
Day 7 | Esztergom - Budapest (65 km)
Cycling along the Danube river valley gets you to the small town of Visegrad. Continue on to the town of Szentendre with its many churches, galleries and arts, and the opportunity to visit the river island of the same name. This town is really a gem of the tour. Finally you finish in Budapest. This magnificent city, once a centre of the Austro-Hungarian empire, boasts incredible architecture and its thriving centre offers many things to do. Overnight in Budapest. (B)
Day 8 | Departure Day
You can depart on your own today. Leave the bikes at the hotel. Or, add some extra nights to have more time to explore Budapest; ask us for hotel add-ons. Trains back to Vienna are possible but are rather long. Catching a departing flight out of Vienna is probably not possible on the same day. (B)
