Itinerary
Day 1: Luang Prabang to Nong Kiaw by Road
Today drive to Nong Kiaw, a peaceful small town along the Nam Ou River about 2.5 hours up river from Luang Prabang. Along the way, pass by karsts limestone mountains and beautiful scenery.
Arrive in Nong Kiaw and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 2: Half day Trek around Nong Kiaw
Following the Nam Ou river you leave Nong Kiaw on small walking trails towards the village of Hat Sao. After about an hour you already have arrived in this riverside village. Your guide will explain you more about the local life style along the Nam Ou river in this mixed Lao Lum and Lao Thung village.
From the village you will follow little trails through a preserved piece of jungle and into the nearby mountain area. Rice fields, forests and agricultural land guide your way towards the next highlight, the refreshing waterfall. A good stretch of the way follows the stream and you walk through the river and little waterfalls.
After an extended break you hike back to the river area. The afternoon you spend some time on the Nam Ou river whlle driving on a small motorboat back to Nong Kiaw.
Day 3: One Day Trekking to Visit Three Minotiry Villages
Travel out into the countryside today and explore several local interesting villages with your tour guide. First, make a stop at Ban Nayang Tai – a village of Tai Lue people who produce cotton and then dye and spin it into beautiful fabrics. The village produces other handicrafts as well and depending on the season you may see harvesting or basket weaving activities.
Later, we will pay a visit to two surrounding villages of different ethnic groups: Ban Sopjam, a village of Khamu and lao people and Ban Namback – a charming village which also happen to be home to Northern Laos’ largest orphanage. Stop by to make a donation of supplies or money as the shelter is surely in need of help. Later, transfer back to Nong Kiaw.
Day 4: Muang Khua to Muang La
Today transfer from Nong Kiaw to Muang Khua by river boat (4-5 hr), and then to Muang La by road.
Muang La is an unforgettable resort located in an unspoilt village in the Lao wilderness. With only four wooden villas and 10 bedrooms, built following traditional architecture, an ambiance of peace and tranquility exudes from the lodge, an ambiance that only a small, traditional structure can offer. After arrival, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 5: Minority Villages
Day by 4x4 to meet Ikhos villages and Hmong, two communities typical of Laos. The track you will use is superb and offers an incredible climb up to 1000m where you will have a memorable and unique point of view. You will visit first a beautiful village Ikho totally isolated. This community from Yunnan and Tibet has remained extremely traditional. Lunch will be taken on a magnificent view. We join in after the Hmong village of Ban Tauser (45 minutes walking). This ethnic group, originating high steppes of Tibet, you will discover their habits, the important place that keep the animals (pigs, buffaloes…) in their lifestyle and care they provide. The path leading to the village completely isolated offers many viewpoints impressive. A few minutes from the village is a viewpoint with a 360 degree panorama on the region… unique. Back to the resort at the end of the day.
Day 6: Muang La to Luang Prabang
Today return from Muang La to Luang Prabang (5-6 hr).
