Jumla – Rara Lake trekking is one of the most popular treks in western Nepal. Rara Lake known as Mahendra Tal which is one of the biggest lakes in Nepal. The other name of natural panorama is the prides of western Nepal that can make anyone fall in love because of its hypnotic aura and bewitching charm. It’s a beautiful, calm heaven surrounded by forests, and a paradise for bird watchers. Rara Lake expedition route is well off the beaten track and affords glimpses of cultures and scenery very different from those in the rest of Nepal. The smallest park in Nepal, Rara National Park in this region is often considered as one of the finest and smallest parks in the world that abounds in coniferous forest and is the ideal habitat for the musk deer, Himalayan black bear and other faunae. The route is very much out-of-the-way with various natural and cultural sites of Nepal. The snow-capped Himalayas reflected in the Rara lake gives you ideal feeling in the trekking. The route is very much ‘off the beaten track’ rewarded with peaceful surrounding, magnificent snow-capped peaks and a delightful and enchanting abundant wild life. 

The trail of the Jumla Rara trek began from the mountain airstrip of Jumla after flying from Kathmandu via Nepalgunj offers magnificent views along the Dhaulagiri range and lovely view of Nepal's western landscape. . The trek offers a dramatic display of clear high altitude lakes mingled with pine, spruce and juniper forests as well as breath taking views of the snow capped Himalayan peaks. The Jumla Rara Lake trail passes through green countryside which provides unusual glimpses of a culture and scenery quite different from that found elsewhere in Nepal. Rara Lake comes within the catchments area of the Karnali River, one of the three main river systems of Nepal. Some of the animals found in here are like the red panda, black bear, yellow-throated martin, ghoral, serow and musk deer. There have also been reported sightings of leopard and wolf. The lake attracts some of the migrant birds like teals, pochards and mallards. And the resident birds include Impeyan, kalij, blood pheasant, chukkor partridge etc. Rara Lake area is covered with coniferous forest with Rhododendron, black juniper, west Himalayan spruce, oak and Himalayan cypress. One of the best trail of Jumla Rara trekking can be found walking deep into the jungle through fine grassland and typical villages where you can find unique religions and cultures, as well as abundant wild life.

Itinerary

Day 1: Greetings at Kathmandu Airport
We will meet you at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel. When you have had your time to settle in and freshen up after your long fight, you will be invited to visit our office for a briefing about your program. You will have meeting with your trekking guide and discuss about the equipment needed for the trekking and we will process for the trekking permits. During this visit we will help you check your equipment and facilitate the processing of other necessary items such as National Park Permits, special permits etc. If you arrive at night we will have same discussion in next day morning after your breakfast.

Day 2: A full day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, the capital valley
The very next morning, after breakfast you will leave for a full day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. You can visit sacred Pashupatinath Temple and Swyambhunath, very ancient and essentially enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage sites. The biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhnath and the fine arts and historical architecture of Kathmandu Durbar Square reflecting the ancient Nepalese culture are highlighted on our guided tour. On return to your hotel you will have time to explore the local area, have dinner and perhaps take a leisurely stroll through the popular streets.

Day 3: Katmandu to Nepalgunj flight
We take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj of about 40min. Have a rest all over the day and can take some leisurely stroll around the city and prepare for next day flight. Nepalgunj is a business city as the centre of trade as well as culture. Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 4: Nepalgunj to Jumla
Take a fly to Jumla from Nepalgunj. The town is a delightful valley and here are the highest limits of rice paddy cultivation in the world. Overnight at Camp.

Day 5: Jumla – Padmara (2900m)
The trail follows the Tila River, passing through a patch work of fields, fragrant pine forest, and green hills through picturesque villages. The trek heads in the direction of Uthugoan (2530m) and begins an ascent up the Padmara valley beginning gently but becoming steeper as the climb continues. The trail ascends gently through a forest of spruces, birches and rhododendron and reaches Padmara. Padmara is a relatively big village with chortens, prayer flags, Mani walls and temples dedicated to Hindi God and Goddess. People living here follow either the Buddhist or Hindu religion.

Day 6: Padmara – Nyawre (2660m)
The trail descends gently alongside the stream to two bhattis (teashops) at Tharamara (3280m). The descent becomes steep through forests of firs, birches, walnuts and bamboo. After a short level stretch the trail zigzags down to the sinja Khola, crossing it on a log bridge at 2680m. Follow the river downstream to Nyawre through potato and wheat fields near the riverbed. Overnight stay at Camp.

Day 7: Nyawre- Chautha
The trail leaves the river and starts a serious climb, passing through Marijuana fields below Burma village. A steep nasty set of switchbacks leads to Kabra where, crammed under a huge over-hanging rock. The steep climb continues for a while, and then levels out before Bhara (2920m), also known as Bhadgoan. Beyond this large village the trail makes a turn into a big valley then descends to the Chaura Khola. Just cross this stream in the tiny village of Chautha (2770m). Try the fields before the village for overnight camping.

Day 8: Chautha – Pina (2400m)
Rocky trails follow through gently ascend until you cross a suspension bridge as the valley becomes narrower. Again trek along an ascending path reaching the check point of Rara National Park at Bhulbule (3130m.). Here you have to pay an entrance fee in order to get inside the National Park. The trail emerges into an immense treeless meadow to Ghurchi Lagna Pass (3460m) with a steep ascent before turning steeply downhill all the way to Pina. En route, you can enjoy forests covered with pine, oak, juniper, rhododendron, bamboo, wild animals and local birds.

Day 9: Pina - Gamgadhi (District headquarter of Mugu District)
Today follow the direct trail to Rara Lake, which stays more or less level through pine forests, then descends to Jhyari Khola at 2400m and follow a mostly ascending path again. On the way, you can observe musk deer and pheasant in forests covered with pine, juniper, oak, rhododendron and other natural vegetation. You come across several villages rich in terraces, monasteries, chortens, prayer flags, Mani walls and local people following the Tibetan life style. Reach Gamgadhi for the overnight stay.

Day 10: Gamgadhi - Rara Lake (2980m)
It is a short, pleasant trek where on reaching the crest of the ridge, we get to experience an excellent panorama to the north, flaunting irresistible beauty and charm. As the trail descends, Rara Lake becomes visible on the northeast. The trail further passes through bamboo and birch forests. After crossing a bridge we climb steadily up a ridge to a low saddle from here we can see fine views of Beautiful Rara Lake. After working 2 hour, we arrive the western bank of the lake.

Day 11: Rest day in Rara Lake
After having breakfast you can visit all around Rara Lake which is almost 13km. In Rara Lake there found otter and different kinds of fish. This region is full of birds, flowers and wild animals.Explore the area, including the old village of Rara. We can also climb up to the wooden observation tower behind the post office for fine views of the lake and surrounding hills. We can even visit the National Park Headquarters. Swimming is allowed in the lake and it is piercingly refreshing. This can be a perfect way for acclimatization.

Day 12: Rara Lake – Gorosingha
It is more rewarding to make a circuit via a different trail. From western end of the lake the trail follows the Khtyar Khola to Majhghatta. Take a lower trail that descends gradually to the river leading straight up to the hill, climbing through pine, spruce and rhododendron forests. There are views of Rara Lake and excellent views of western Himalaya from the ridge of Ghurchi Mara at 3710m. Follow the long route, the main trail as it drops into the Ghatta valley, then heads towards Gorosingha.

Day 13: Gorosingha to Sinja (2440m)
Follow the sinja Khola downstream to the Sinja. A varied trail with scenic views climbs Lumsa. It is then a short walk down the fertile valley, on a renovated trail, through a heavily populated region to the Brahman and Chettri village of Sinja (2440m). Sinja was the capital of the Malla dynasty that ruled western Nepal. There is an Old Malla Durbar & Tripura Sundari Temple.

Day 14: Sinja trek to Jaljala chaur (3270m)
From Sinja the trail crosses the Sinja Khola on a wooden cantilever bridge and then begins a long trip up to the Dhubi Khola. After passing a few villages, the trail crosses the back and forth across the river on a series of log bridges. Most of the trek is through pines, birches and oaks also few scattered houses and barley and corn fields. The trail climbs to Jaljala chaur, a gigantic meadow full of grazing horses. Overnight camping.

Day 15: Jaljala -Chere Chaur (3010m)
Keep climbing through the forests to another meadow, just below the ridge at 3510m and then descend to a few houses at Chauri Khola (3090m). Cross a stream and contour around the head of the valley, staying high, eventually crossing another ridge to rejoin the upward hill trail at Chere. Overnight at camp.

Day 16: Chere Chaur to Jumla
This day you trek through a steeply descending path all the way to Jumla passing splendid views of green hill, forests, villages and ridges. After reaching Jumla, we can spend our afternoon exploring the busy market town or simply pursuing.

Day 17: Jumla – Nepalgunj - Kathmandu
We take a flight from Jumla to Nepalgunj. On reaching Nepalgunj, we return to Kathmandu on the next available flight. You can spend the rest of the day shopping and general sightseeing.

Day 18: Free day in Kathmandu
Today you will have a free day in Kathmandu valley. Have some rest in your hotel. You can also take a leisurely stroll over the streets and buy some souvenirs and remembering from Nepal. At evening we will have a typical Nepali dinner accompanied with cultural shows in Hotel.

Day 19: Farewell Departure
Today is free or last minute you have few hour special shopping for your relatives. If you have more time you can do some shopping or sightseeing. We will drop you to the International airportto catch your flight back to your home and wish for your Safe journey.
