Join us as we launch the second ever international marathon in Uganda!

This is a truly global marathon held in rural Uganda, for local causes. The 2015 marathon was the biggest sporting event in the history of the region, and 2016 will be even bigger and better! The community have thrown their support behind not only the race, but also the runners - you! Over 1,500 runners, with 150+ international participants, from every corner of the globe. You’ll marshal the Kids Run Wild event on the Friday - the fun run for the local school children & orphans. You’ll also get to visit the projects we are supporting in the community, see how your new friends live, and party with them after the race. Take on a beautiful - but tough- rural course. Your choice: run the full 26.2 mile marathon course, the half marathon, or the 10km.

Along the route you will enjoy the incredible views across the lush Ugandan countryside; you’ll pass through small towns, fields of banana trees and so much more. The course will be marshalled by teachers and students of Shauku Foundation and CHEDRA's project, Bugabira Community School – the very kids you are will be fundraising for will be cheering you on along the way, volunteering their time to help you achieve your goal. We want them to enjoy the gift of giving not just receiving. This is no ordinary marathon.

If like many of us you are tempted to join an international marathon but don't want to rough it when you've got a marathon to run, then this COMFORT VERSION is for you. You will stay six nights at the comfortable Brovad Hotel where you can come home at night to find your usual creature comforts: a proper bed, and in the morning a full English breakfast. The hotel also has a swimming pool where you can cool off after a hot day in the sun. After all, why torture yourself when you've got a marathon to run?

BUT WAIT! THAT'S NOT ALL!

You're going to go to Uganda and not see the wildlife?? You've completed the marathon of a lifetime and your choosing to simply head home to your day job?? Why not join us on the Monday as we depart on a 4 day Gorilla Experience! A great way to round off your marathon experience. See the best of African wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park, board a boat in one of the greatest hippo recreation grounds in the world, spend two nights in the African rainforest at the beautiful Gorilla Valley Lodge, and spend an entire day in the famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest watching gorilla families interact in the wild, only a few feet away from you!

Itinerary

Day 1: WELCOME TO UGANDA - Arrival at Entebbe airport on either Tuesday or Wednesday (we’ll guide you in booking the best flights). We’ll pick you up and take you on the 3 hour drive down to Masaka- stopping off at the Equator for a chance to see if water really drains in opposite directions either side of the line. Overnight at Brovad Hotel.

Day 2: MVRC VISIT - After breakfast we will meet the other runners and then spend the day in the Masaka Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (MVRC) – a school for disabled youths to learn new skills – seeing exactly where the fundraised money has gone, the lives it has changed. Overnight at Brovad Hotel.

Day 3: PROJECT VISITS - Thursday is Make a Difference Day. After breakfast at the hotel we will join the others for project visits. In 2015, the Uganda Marathon supported 8 projects around Masaka, using fundraising money raised by runners. Whichever of the projects that you choose to raise money for, you will be able to visit them and see the direct impact that your money is having to the project and the people involved. Overnight at Brovad Hotel.

Day 4: KIDS RUN WILD RACE - After breakfast at the hotel we will head down to the race course. To kick off the race weekend spectacle the international runners will host a fun day for children from Masaka’s schools and orphanages at Liberation Square, giving them the chance to experience that finish line feeling. A day dedicated to fun runs, games, bouncy castles face painting and general fun. Our athletes will marshal the events, handing out finisher prizes, including not only medals but vital learning supplies including pens and exercise books. This event is funded entirely from international entry fees – we figure you might as well have some fun as well! Overnight at Brovad Hotel.

Day 5: ENJOY MASAKA LIFE - After breakfast at the hotel it's time to get out and about again. Visit the incredible projects the Marathon and Shauku Foundation are funding, meet the kids your hard work is helping. Enjoy Masaka town, enjoy Africa. Day 7: HEAD HOME OR JOIN OUR 4 DAY GORILLA EXPERIENCE - Today you have a choice: head home or join us to discover Uganda on a 4 day Gorilla Experience? (This can be booked as an optional extra when making your booking) Alternatively you can book it separately here: http://www.inspiredescapes.com/inspired-challenges/4-day-gorilla-experience. If you choose to join us, we will be picked up from Masaka Town and drive up to the famous Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here you’ll see a diversity of wildlife, including lions, leopards, giraffes, antelopes, elephants and warthogs! This afternoon we will have a boat cruise on the kazinga channel which is one of the largest hippo recreation grounds in the world, as well as numerous Nile crocodiles. Tonight we will stay at a boutique safari lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park with 360 degree views of the park.

Day 8: FIRST NIGHT IN THE RAINFOREST - After breakfast we will have a morning game drive in the park before making our way to the mystical Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Bwindi National Park is a world heritage site as it’s biologically one of the most diverse forests in Africa. Fondly known as the Impenetrable Forest it remains home to half of the world’s gorilla population. This evening we will enjoy the view of the forest from a beautiful rainforest lodge - Gorilla Valley Lodge - 5 minutes from where we will begin our trek tomorrow morning.

Day 9: GORILLA TREK - Today we will make our way into the forest in search of the famed gorillas. Find out how the Impenetrable Forest gets its name as we ascend through a mountainous and heavily forested African terrain. It’s all worth it when you finally see these incredible creatures. Get the opportunity to be up close with a gorilla family and spend an hour watching in awe as they play, forage and interact. We guarantee this moment will stay with you forever. At the end of the day we will trek back to base and head back to your rainforest accommodation for a well-deserved shower and rest.

Day 10: FAREWELL - At a time that suits, you will be picked up and taken back to Entebbe Airport in Kampala for your outbound flight back home or onwards to Kenya, Ethiopia, or Tanzania for your next Inspired Escapes in Africa.
