The Surin Teaching program is an exciting opportunity to experience life in a rural Thai school.

You will be supported by a bilingual coordinator and working in small groups you will plan and teach English lessons for students’ aged 5 -16. The majority of your teaching will be done at primary schools for children aged 5-12. Your coordinator will give you full details of your timetable and school location during orientation.

English is a very important subject in Thai schools and forms part of the core curriculum. Children who develop their English language skills have a huge advantage moving into higher education or finding employment.  Historically the Thai school system puts emphasis on complex and often impractical grammar exercises. Today, Thai schools are now appreciating the contribution of native English speaking teachers as the focus shifts towards communication. Many rural schools do not have the funding to hire full-time English speakers so they are very grateful for all the support from volunteers. In exchange, you will have a memorable time learning about rural Thai culture as well spending time with some great children.

The focus of your classes will be communication and encouraging the children to have fun learning English.  You will be responsible for planning your own lessons and will be provided a range of topics as suggestions including animals, colours, numbers and the world around us. Don’t worry you’ll have plenty of time to get prepared and will be given advice and lesson materials to help you with your planning.

Itinerary

Day 1: WELCOME TO THAILAND - You will be greeted at Suvarnabhumi Airport (also known as Bangkok International Airport) by our friendly team. We will then proceed to check into your accommodation for the weekend - a quaint local guest house on Khao San Road, Bangkok’s famous backpacker hub. You have the rest of the day to relax and explore the bustling streets of Bangkok. If you're stuck for things to do, ask our team for some advice on some must see places.

Day 2: ORIENTATION AND CITY TOUR - This morning you will formally meet your coordinators and fellow group members who will share this exciting experience with you. At orientation you will learn more about Thailand and the teaching programme. Once we have all the formalities out the way, let's explore Bangkok! We will go on a journey through the Old City which is full of an array of colourful temples, ancient architecture and palaces. To end the day we will go on a peaceful river boat ride. Overnight at Khao San Road.

Day 3: TRANSFER TO SURIN - After breakfast we will make our way to Surin to begin your volunteering! Your group coordinators will organise transport but typically it will be a 7 hour train ride. Thailand’s trains are slow but full of character making the journey an experience in itself—remember to take photos! On occasion your transfer may be via public bus. Either way you’ll have a comfortable seat, air-con and marvelous views. When you arrive in Surin, our local team will take you to your accommodation and help you settle in and prepare for visiting the school tomorrow. You’ll also be given your teaching timetable for the week ahead.

Day 4-7: TEACHING IN SURIN - Each day you will be collected from the meeting point outside near your accommodation by our truck. Your coordinator will then accompany you to school. The journey to the school will take approximately 20-30minutes. When you arrive at the school you’ll be met by the teaching staff and invited to the morning assembly with the whole school to introduce yourself to the children. This isn’t anything to worry about and is simply a formality – you will just need to say your name, say hello and give a big smile. Just follow the coordinators lead. After assembly, your coordinator will accompany you to the first class of the day. You will work in small teams teaching the children. Typically you can expect 4 hours of teaching a day with the remainder of the project day free for lesson planning. The typical school day is from 08:00- 15:00 but your project times will vary according to your timetable. You will finish your teaching week on Thursday afternoon. Enjoy this time and have fun teaching the children

Day 8: FREE & EASY - Today is free for you to relax and explore Surin if you are staying on to teach the following week. If this is your final day at the program, our team will assist you with planning your onward travel. Those continuing the program will enjoy a three day weekend to fully unwind and enjoy their surroundings. Please note: placements longer than 1 week will follow the same format as this itinerary. You will be placed within Schools Monday to Thursday and Friday to Sunday are free for exploring
