Unforgettable experience - if you're at all interested you should go for it!

My family (my wife, two boys ages 8 & 5 YO, and I) just finished a 5-day adventure with the Tuk Tuk Club. It will easily go down as one of the most memorable experiences from our 2 months in Thailand. We debated the full 11-day tour but after discussion with Bruce (the director) about the itinerary and some particularly long driving days, we opted for the shorter option.

I could go on and on about various great things from our trip, but my key takeaway is: if you think you might be interested, you should go for it!
It is -not- a cookie cutter tour, it is -not- a posh luxury tour, and it is -not- for those who want to tick boxes off a ‘to-visit’ list.
What it is, though, is a wonderfully different way to experience part of Northern Thailand, with adventurous peers, while getting to drive your own (manual shift) tuk tuk!
All four of our family loved this tour, and none of the activities were out of reach of even our 5YO, though one day did get a little long for for him. I would probably not recommend it for families with kids much under 5 unless you go for a custom tour as the itinerary, while it does have ‘rest days’ programmed in, is pretty full. Otherwise, both our kids had a blast on the tour and had a good balance of ‘tour’ and ‘down time’. The kids really loved just riding along on the tuk tuk, rocking out to some tunes (if you have kids, highly recommend you bring a portable speaker for your tuk tuk!).
The staff were also amazing. From my first email correspondence with Bruce the team was very professional, helpful, and on-point. The tour team of Tony, Graham, Yaa Yaa, and Bun handled the tour masterfully. As the lead guide, Tony was outstanding. We can’t say enough good things about him - he really went above and beyond consistently and the whole group and tour benefitted from it.
If the idea of this tour piques your curiosity at all, I cannot recommend it enough.

    Amazing Experience

I travelled alone for the 5 day tour at the beginning of November. I am so glad I did it, it was a real cultural insight.. we stayed in a hotel opposite our training camp for 2 nights and then in made up huts overlooking a rice field in the mountains for the following two nights. My two tour guides were Tony (Thai) and Graham (English), they were on another level; so funny, always there to help and very informative.

We had group lunches and dinners every day with breakfasts being included every morning. Most of the lunches and dinners were provided.
The first day involved basic tuk tuk training opposite the hotel with a local drive to a temple.
The second day we visited another couple of temples in the morning and spent the afternoon at an elephant park and bamboo rafting.
The third day was the last day of driving for us - we drove up a mountain to our accommodation with different cultural and scenic stops en-route. In the afternoon we went to Doi Inthanon Park.
On day four we went on a couple of hours trek through the jungle with a cool down in the waterfall.
I had an excellent time and would highly recommended it to anyone with a sense of adventure!

    5 Day Tuk Tuk safari

Driving a TukTuk was a amazing experience! The tuition we received was comprehensive and also brisk- my daughter and I received our “pass” within an hour and then we were able to practice on the quiet backroads as we made our way to visit a couple of Bhuddist Temples. Our guides were thoughtful and accommodating and helped ensure we got the maximum from our trip, both in driving experience and cultural information. We particularly enjoyed the trip to Doi Inthanon and the opportunity to visit the Karen hill tribe. Trekking in the national park was another highlight, with the photos of our picnic lunch (fried rice wrapped in banana leaf) under the amazing waterfall being the source of much envy from friends and family back home. All the food choices were memorable, from the riverside restaurant for dinner to roadside cafe on our drive to the moumtains - very much part of the Thai holiday experience......Thanks to YaYa and Ken for a truly memorable experience.

We travelled on the Tuk Tuk Club 11 day tour last May.

I can do nothing but praise every aspect of this journey. The driving, the countryside, the sights, the food, the fantastic tour guides - everything was just perfect, Straight from booking the holiday when Bruce was able to help and answer all manner of questions, through to Graham and Tony our 24/7 guides nothing was too much trouble,

I truly could not recommend this tour too highly and I’m lucky enough to have travelled extensively in the past,

1 Day Tuk Tuk Tour - The best tour ever

Booked the tour via my hostel, pick up at 07:45 at the hostel, by our guide Graham. Picked 2 girls up, so in total 3 persons + guide. About 30 min drive to the training area. Got an induction by Graham on the Tuk Tuks and did our first rides there. After about 30 min we felt comfortable to drive on the street and also Graham was happy with us.

Ride to the first temple had a walk their got some information about the place by Graham und continued to the second temple.
Again a walk around with details to the place.
Ride about 30min to the elephant sanctuary.
Had lunch their, changed clothes and started right after to feed the elephants. Walked with them to the river and had a bath with them
Ride by car to the start point of the rafting tour, boarded the bamboo float and did the raft which was about 40 min long. Awesome experience :)
Transfer from the end point of the raft to the elephant sanctuary. Changed clothes and had the last ride back to the Tuk Tuk garage. Transfer back to the hostel. Arrived their approximately 17:15.

This was way the best tour I did in Thailand, riding the Tuk Tuk is such a great experience! And also the rest of program is simply amazing.

A big shout out to our guide Graham, such a great guy. He made the day that special... excellent job.
    Thanks for that wonderful day
I just can recommend this tour to everybody, it’s worth it !

UNforgettable, spiritual and a once in a lifetime bucket list ticker

Firstly I’d like to thank Bruce, Tony, Graham, Yaya and Boon for not only providing one of the best experiences of my life but for becoming great friends who have taught me so much.

From the start, the tour dates didn’t coincide with my travel dates but after contacting Bruce, he made sure that I was able to get on the 5 day tour and he’d get me to the airport in time for my flight.

From day one we had great fun learning how to drive the tuk tuk. Each day just got better and better. 5 days later I’d driven the amazing tuk tuk through the northern rural villages, encountering the friendliest locals. I’d fed, walked and bathed elephants which was just incredible. I’d made my way down a river on a bamboo raft. I’d stood on the highest point of Thailand. I went trekking through nature reserves which had various waterfalls, among the best Iv seen. We’d had lunch on the rocks my the waterfalls in form of traditional fried rice wrapped in banana leaf. Sampled Arrabica coffee direct from the farmers grinder. Id visited mind blowing temples and met monks. This experience was especially poiniont thanks to the calm atmosphere of the regions where the temples stood and Tony’s in depth explanations of the Buddhist way of life and it’s core teachings. It’s a philosophy I am now trying to follow.

There were so many experiences in between which just made this trip so incredible.

I’d eaten the most amazing food and despite the fact that I don’t eat pork, there were many alternatives. The hotels were great and I had absolutely no issues in either of the hotels I stayed at. My only regret is I never did the full 11 day tour.

This was my 4th trip to Thailand and I can safely say thanks to the incredible staff, Katie (my tuk tuk) and the incredible region of Chiang Mai, it was the best!

I could not recommend this enough! I went to Thailand alone and despite that the group I was part of was an amazing collection of people of which I’d like to now call friends. We had plenty of fun nights drinking beer, laughing and connecting with people from all walks of life.

Make this the last review you read and book your place now. It’s one of the best things Iv ever done!

Thank you The Tuk Tuk Club. You were more than just a tour for me

Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVAL, DRIVER TRAINING AND MAKING MERIT AT A LOCAL TEMPLE

We’ll pick you up at 10:00am from the CHIANG MAI GATE HOTEL in Chiang Mai city and transfer you to our training base for the adventure ahead.

On arrival at our ‘base camp’ in Mae Wang at around 11:30 we’ll check you in to your accommodation, have lunch together and then begin your driver training. Once everyone has got to grips with the basics we’ll head on your first test drive to a local Temple where we can ‘make merit’ for the journey ahead!

In the evening it’s time to spend more time getting to know your Tuk Tuk and enjoying a great Thai feast.

Inclusions:

·         Transfer from Chiang Mai Gate Hotel to our ‘base camp’

·         Full Tuk Tuk orientation and training

·         ‘Making merit’ at the local temple

·         Lunch and dinner

·         Twin / triple share accommodation in a beautiful resort in Mae Wang – air-conditioning, en-suite rooms (single rooms can be requested but a surcharge applies)

Day 2: MORE TRAINING AND ELEPHANTS

After breakfast we’ll go through more driver training, building on what you learned yesterday, and run through all the nitty-gritty of the trip ahead.

Then it’s time to venture a little further afield with a test drive through small country roads to a fantastic elephant home that is leading the way in taking elephants away from a life of trekking and instead creating an environment where people can learn about and spend time with elephants on their terms, not ours!

We’ll head slowly in convoy to the elephant home giving all the opportunity to get some ‘road time’ and confidence. On arrival, you’ll learn about the history of the elephants, what the team at the Elephant home are doing and then, after a great lunch at the home, it’s time to enjoy the company of these wonderful animals. You’ll be able to feed them, get to know them and then walk with them (no riding allowed!) to the local river where you’ll bathe with them.

In the late afternoon we’ll have more driving practice as we head back to the base camp for dinner and getting ready for an adventurous day tomorrow.

Inclusions:

·         Tuk Tuk driver training

·         Visit to the elephant home and all associated activities

·         Breakfast, lunch and dinner

·         Twin / triple share accommodation in a beautiful resort in Mae Wang – air-conditioning, en-suite rooms (single rooms can be requested but a surcharge applies)

Day 3: AND WE’RE OFF – DOI INTHANON HERE WE COME

After an early breakfast we’re hitting the road and heading along small country roads towards Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon. Your guide will be in the lead Tuk Tuk and we’ll travel in convoy with the support vehicle at the rear. The first 20-30km of the route is simple with gentle curving roads but we soon hit stunning switch back bends, incredible scenery and tiny Karen hill tribe villages as we make our way towards the National Park.

Enjoy the look of complete surprise from everyone as they see Tuk Tuks this far up in the mountains – trust us, novelty doesn’t not even begin to cover it – and we’ll stop frequently to have a look at different villages / views and of course to sample some of the great coffee and snacks in small villages. Lunch will be in a roadside snack bar – real Northern Thai style.

We arrive at our accommodation mid-afternoon before jumping in another classic Thai mode of transport - a ‘Sorngtaew’ - a shared taxi adapted from a pick up truck, which drives us to the summit of the mountain.

Inclusions:

·         Tuk Tuks and support vehicle

·         Breakfast and dinner (lunch at own expense – (+/- 50THB)

·         National Park entry fees

·         Twin / triple / quad shared accommodation in Doi Inthanon – this is the most basic of the accommodation but intentionally so to ensure you’re located in the most stunning area and perfectly located for the trek tomorrow. Fan cooled, en-suite bathrooms

Day 4: TREKKING

We’re giving the Tuk Tuks a well deserved rest today and exploring the National Park on foot. Accompanied by an expert trekking guide we’ll explore the stunning forest around the area on a trek of around 6km which takes in great vista’s and the obligatory waterfall.

Lunch is provided on the trek and your trekking guide is a mine of information on both the people and wildlife inhabiting the area all around you.

NOTE: This trek is suitable for all as long as you’re able to walk 6KM. The pace is gentle but there are some up and downhill sections as you’d expect in the mountains.

We’ll arrive back at the accommodation around mid – late afternoon, just in time to rest up, relax and then enjoy a great countryside Thai feast.

Inclusions:

·         Trek and trekking guide

·         Breakfast, lunch and dinner

·         Twin / triple / quad shared accommodation in Doi Inthanon – this is the most basic of the accommodation but intentionally so to ensure you’re located in the most stunning area and perfectly located for the trek tomorrow. Fan cooled, en-suite bathrooms

Day 5: TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR TRUSTY TUK TUK

The transfer will take place in the morning and you will arrive in Chiang Mai (The Chiang Mai Gate Hotel) before midday.

Inclusions:

·         Transfer to The Chiang Mai Gate Hotel
